I just purchased a dell 2550 rack server for some homenetworking, filesharing, maybe some even webserving. I've been playing with computers for a while now, but the server side seems like a whole different ball game. Im looking to instal SuSE Enterprise. Can anyone point to some books or links for help getting started. Anything helps, im sick of lame reviewing on amazon.com etc. I need some solid stuff. Networking, Internet security, etc. Thanks .

Im not really a Linux person so I cant really help you with that part. Though I will suggest from a security standpoint that you should not put a web server on your file server. Even if it is a home system you should still kee them seperate.

PS...Why not a Windows server?

I would recommend going to your local bookstore and browsing their computer section. Every time I go, I always find something that looks snazzy that I pick up. Most places have a pretty solid Linux section and most have a great selection of networking titles.

Do note that most linux OSs are really similar -- installations and system management tools may differ slightly between distributions, but most linux is linux. A general "how to use linux" book should get you started 🙂

why not a windows server?

Windows is way too expensive to run on a server. After liscensing and all that , the support base from microsoft isn't worth the price for their server 2003 software. Plus, im just starting out. Im sure server 2003 can offer me alot, but thats alot that i wont use. Id rather learn for free with a nice windows like linux distro.
