Does the Viewsonic have a user-replaceable battery?

No. But I've found with my usage patterns that it isn't really needed for me. I use my PDA for a good portion of the day that drop it in the cradle at night.

I will get the Dell just because it has compactflash (I already have a bunch of compactflash cards I can use, plus my A40 is a compactflash camera.) Its good to see that the Dell also has support for the future in mind with SD.

I'd still go for the Viewsonic one because it looks to be smaller.

The advantages of the Dell are that it will have very good battery life and will have a CF slot which is great because I have a few big cards from my camera. Anyway, I still like the looks of the Viewsonic better.

Does that mean when the battery does go dead, the PDA is no good anymore unless it is run in the cradle? If so, how many hours total do these batteries live?

I've always gotten at least 3 - 4 hours of heavy constant use on my PocketPCs. For more simpler tasks, it'll last around 6 hours (or around 8-10 hours with the screen off playing MP3's). But truth be told, if you're using a PDA for more than 5 or 6 hours a day, then you have some issues;)

I was actually asking about how long they live, in years before the battery dies and refuses to recharge. I find that to be important if you are unable to open the battery compartment and replace the dead one with a new one.

Oh, 3-4 years. By that time, people have upgrade and moved on.
