I just snagged a 6800 from a Dell PC. It's a PCI-e one, but I don't have PCI-e on my comp at home. Is it worth upgrading from an xp2800, radeon9700pro to an a64 3000 (gonna OC the crap out of it of course) & GF6800?

Are the 6800 PCI-e ones unlockable or will i be stuck at 8 pipelines?

Will i see any noticable gain going from the 9700pro to just a locked 6800, or will it just be a few FPS?

IIRC 6800s have 12 pipelines with 1-2 disabled vertex shaders.

Most likely you will see a significant overall FPS increase across the board, but by how much still will depend on which resolution and games you use and play.

Also, to add, the 6800 does not perform very well above 1280x1024 from what I have seen so far.

The A64 is an excellent choice, but you may wish to wait for A64 dual-core though.

i can't run my games above 1280x1024 anyway. my 18.1" LCD only goes to 1280. if it'll be a nice noticable increase.. i guess i'll buy the hardware. i'll get a dual core a64. i'm probably gonna try and find one on here used for cheap and just get that DFI mobo that you can make SLi ready. i MIGHT be able to get another 6800 and run 2 of them. dunno yet though, that's why i was just asking about the performance difference in just a 1 6800 over my 9700. thanks for the feedback. :)

The cheapest desktop dual core processor will be $500....it'll be a while before they drop.

No they are not unlockable. Your stuck at 12 pipelines.

You should see a huge gain especially if you move up to an A64.

The 6800 should perform just fine abouve 1280.

It has a 256 bit memory bus.
