the fan is not spinning on it. model is about 1.5 years old.

can this only be done thru Dell? if not, where can i find one (i vaguely remember that they reversed some power wires so you can't use a standard power supply).

thanks

You could put a WTB in the FS/FT here and find someone who is just using their case as a shell.

Another choice (no idea how price compares with Dell) is www.pcpowercooling.com they have Dell replacements (just be sure to check the size of the supply since you might have a "slim" one).

Their customer service is excellent so they might be able to tell you the right replacement PS if you tell them the Dell model that you have.

thanks. this is for a friend, and they really want to have it up and running tomorrow. that's why I was hoping to tell them if they can run to staples tomorrow and pick up an antec PS and use that.

be careful when replacing dell power supply's. i don't know if it is true w/ new dells, but i know that for a period dell's ATX Power supplies were not ATX compliant. i burned out a system by replacing a dell power supply w/ a standard ATX power supply. problem is they use the same connectors as the ATX standard.

PC Power and cooling does have dell compliant power supplies tho.

Or better yet, check to see if your dell warranty is up. A lot of them came with 3 year parts and service.

If the supply works but the fan is not running just replace the fan, A standard caxe fan works just fine.

it's just the power supply fan
i think they'd better replace the whole PSU. They have another old dell and hopefully if the wattage is the same, can swap that in.

As long as the other system wasn't being used anyways a swap is easiest, but swapping the fan is fast and leaves 2 fully working systems otherwise.......

everysite I've seen says don't open the power supply? they would like to use the old system, but it was a win95 rig, to give you an idea how old the components are. I think that it might be usable for a 6 year old they have, but that's about it, or scavenging for parts in emergiencies (cd rom, mouse, etc)

My Dimension 4500 that i bought back in July has a standard ATX power supply, so you might be able to replace it without buying a special PS. Take it out and compare the pin colors to a standard PS. Also goto dell and look at the spec sheet.
