That's one way to keep the economy going and saying f/u to the tree huggers at the same time.

If you have ever ordered a Dell server rack, it ships with a seriously heavy duty bracket to bolt it in place if you so desire. I mean, this thing could probably survive being run over by an M1 Abrams, but of course they package it in a box and all that jazz, not like they couldn't just fasten it to the shipping pallet that the rack comes on or anything.

I'm quite pleased w/ Dell's packaging, I've never had a single item from them reach me damaged :)

That's nothing. Imagine a room full of unpacked monitors, computers, speakers, keyboards, mice, manuals. A room full. You couldn't fit two people in the room after that.

LOL thats great.

TBH I find packaging is overkill, not just Dell, but everything in general. I built a new server so ordered all the parts that you'd normally need, (cpu/mobo/ram/case etc) for just a tower, no monitor or anything.

I then seperated the recyclables from non recyclables, so basically cardboard, then everything else the city wont take. I filled a garbage bag FULL of packaging stuff. And I was packing it but it was full. That's just 1 PC. I feel bad throwing stuff out like that but it's just not recyclable around here. Packing styrofoam is a big waste too. I don't care about the "professional" factor... just use newspaper or something, at least it can be recycled.

Well, uh, DUH. The room would be, like, you know, FULL.

The important thing would be the quantity of those items. You know, like whether that was 3 of each, or 50 of each....

Have you been to there factories before? Newspaper will not cut it during the manufacturing process they use to build the system. That being said they are looking at low packing material options for bulk PC purchases. Say like packing 4 laptops inside of a box together so each laptop isn't in its own box. I have seen the mess that unpacking 50 desktops can leave and it isn't pretty. The Janitorial service must hate us at night when they come in and see a huge stack of packaging and a note that says Basura on it.

a lot of those foam peanuts are potato or corn starch based. the poly peanuts can be recycled at packing and shipping stores, according to wikipedia.

Not even joking, I have a dell and have the complete care and service. When my laptop cord went bad they sent me another one. While I was on the phone, they asked if I was missing any screws or any rubber feet. I actually needed 2 new feet and 1 screw.

A few days later I had 3 boxes at my door. The charger/cord/ac adapter was in one box. In a bigger box was 5 rubber feet and in an even larger box was 2 screws. I died inside.

I love how dell ships cable in the monitor box. Plastic bag twist tied and heat sealed at the ends. cable ends foam padded, rubber banded and plastic capped. FFS it's in a box, encased in foam what could possibly happen to that monitor cord if it was just loose?

I rememer similar things in the Navy.

We'd get one resistor in a little plastic bag, inside a medium padded bag, inside a small unmarked box, inside a medium shipping box.
Then we'd wonder if Americans knew what the hell was happening to their tax dollars.
