Dell P1130 Won't Do 2048x1536 Like It's Supposed To

so it's a P1130, and it's supposed to have a max resolution of 2048x1536. highest I can get it is 1800x1440.

I tried it with 2 different video cards, on 2 diffrent computers, and I'll spare the gory details but the cards do support that resolution. I'm running xp.

I read others who had the same problem even with 8800GTX cards.

now they were talking about writing stuff into some driver file to make it ignore some kind of limitation. I didn't get what they were saying, what file, and it could have been Linux they were talking about anyways.

but... how can I get it to work? any ideas?

Is this on XP or Vista? On XP, you should be able to add the resolution into your monitor's inf file and load that into Windows. The file can be edited directly or you can use Rivatuner to do it for you. I'm not sure if this works on Vista.

Yeah, sounds like a driver issue to me, not a hardware issue. That is a rather unusual resolution that is probably not supported due to its minuscule market presence. Maybe search through old nVidia driver files and see if any of them support that res. (granted with old drivers you'll likely lose performance however)

EDIT: CP5670 sounds like they know whats up... I'd try that

I don't think it's related to the Nvidia drivers but is some issue with his monitor inf file. I vaguely remember hearing something like this about that particular monitor a few years ago. It should be easy to fix in the inf though. I use that resolution regularly without any problems (on a different monitor).

Yes, that should do it. Make sure you load the new inf into Windows through the update driver button in the device manager (it may complain about the driver being unsigned but that's fine), not the right click option on the file.

You can use more or less the same method to globally override refresh rates, by the way. I'm using a modified inf file myself, but for this purpose.

ur a genius!

it shows what appears to be a 1800x1440 chunk of the desktop, and the rest is in pan-n-scan mode.

tweak the .inf some more? or what

are you connected with a D-SUB or DVI cable? i remember something about DVI cables only carrying upto 1600x1200@60KHz or some other limitation.

D-sub. it's got VGA cables and it's a CRT flat screen picture tube monitor.

btw, I unchecked the "hide modes..." for the P793 monitor (1600x1200), which is on another high res video card; options on that also go up to 2048x1536; setting it higher than 1600x1200 put it in pan-n-scan mode just like the P1130 does when higher than 1800x1440.

maybe the P1130 really can't go higher than 1800x1440.

I think I'm going to chuck it and get a Sony GDM-F520. I'm through messing with it.

That pan mode may be coming up because Windows thinks that resolution is unsupported. Did you get any message about the unsigned driver when you put the new inf in?

It would be strange for a 130khz monitor to not be able to do 2048x1536. That 1800x1440 is an odd resolution too, not even the right aspect ratio for CRTs. :p

nope, no messages.

yep, it would be strange. the Dell P1130 is a clone of the Sony GDM-F520, which has no problems doing that resolution. :chokingrubberchicken;
