Happy customer

got a 4600 desktop last May, clean installed Windows, absolutely no problems, runs like a champ, and is very quiet

oh yeah, and it only cost $400 - 2.8ghz p4, 80gb 7200rpm Seagate, and 512mb ddr333 🙂

Here's some things to do:

Use Add/Remove in the Control Panel - aggressively
Use Services under Administrative Tools to disable any unneeded services
Use MSCONFIG as indicated above.

You shouldn't have to reinstall everything - that will take a long time, and you will have to reinstall any OEM software you DO want, which can be a biatch too.

Just uninstall all the crap they add using Add/Remove programs. If your not intimedated by the registy, make sure HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows?Current Version/Run (and also HKCU) only list the items you want to start at start-up.

I've dealt with my fair share of dells in the past and while they are pretty good machines for the most part one think that you HAVE to do as soon as u take that sucker out of the box is:
fidisk c:
format c:
install off of winxpprosp2 cd
its just something you gotta do.

Yeah, Dells are pretty good if you need a nice deal. I bought my 4600 for $400, dropped in my monitor/keyboard/mouse, Radeon video card, Audigy sound card, and Pioneer DVD burner from my old system. Same capabilities, just twice as fast, for only $400. Worked out great. I say, (1) buy a dell, (2) reformat and clean install Windows, and (3) install your own hardware and software. Done! 🙂

Can't if it's a laptop 😛 But thanks for your fanboi input.

True, but it is a fact that the AMD 64 bit CPU blows away anything Intel has to offer at the moment.

Check out the new Gateway laptops if you want an A64 laptop. The newest A64 model is the 7422gx at Best Buy. I have the 7405gx, which is the predecessor to the 7422gx. A64, gig of ram, 8x dl dvd burner, wifi g, card reader, glossy widescreen, etc., on sale for like $1250. Nice deal if you're planning on buying an entire new system but need mobility.

Hell! I'd like to have only 25! I usually idle with 50-60 processes, depending on what day of the week it is. 🙂
