A friend of mine needs a pretty basic laptop/notebook.

Her requirements are:

- Browsing teh intarwebs + emailing
- Basic MS-Office-like use
- CD/DVD capabilities, mainly for watching movies (and, possibly, burning).
- Affordable (Conservatively, I would say between $500 and $750) and reliable.

- No-need for 19"+ ultrawide screen
- Not a gamer (to my knowledge)

As I don't know jack about laptops, I told her that Dell could be an option (instead of B&M stores) but that's pretty much it I can tell her so far.

So, Dell od no Dell ? Any bargain nowadays on or offline ? Any model/brand to avoid or to worship ?

I will definitely appreciate your valuable input.

Thanks

i think dell has the best bang for the buck. i got a 700m and it's been a workhorse, quite cheap too

For the value you can't beat Dell. $500-$600 could buy her a very nice laptop

However, Dell is having shipping issues with their Consumer Inspiron and XPS line of laptops (Mainly the ones that allow a colored faceplate option), so if she needs it right away you may want to look elsewhere, perhaps HP or Toshiba in your local Best-Buy/C-City. They usually have some nice back to school deals.

Basically any laptop with a dual-core processor and at least 1GB RAM will be more than plenty for her.

Dell used to be the best bang for the buck - that is now H-P.

I have an HP, I have always enjoyed it and it has never given me problems worth noting in the several years i have had it. But dell seems to be good now too.

Thank you guys for your inputs.

She eventually ordered a Dell (I don't know the model though)

Thanks again :cookie:
