I own an HP and it has been very reliable. I would not hesitate to recommend one. Your question is way too vague though. Better overall? It's gonna boil down to opinion (read flamewar) with no hard facts. Do you know what you are looking for in a laptop at least?
If you're comparing the i8600 to the nc8000 or the 600m to the nc6000 I'd say HP has a distinctive edge but... It could really go either way depending on model.
The Compaq X1000 and the HP NX7000 (same laptop, different branding) has good comments, especially since the problems concerning the keyboard were solved. We can't exactly say the same thing from the Dells when we look at their forum though.
