Dell or HP notebooks?

I own an HP and it has been very reliable. I would not hesitate to recommend one. Your question is way too vague though. Better overall? It's gonna boil down to opinion (read flamewar) with no hard facts. Do you know what you are looking for in a laptop at least?
 
The Compaq X1000 and the HP NX7000 (same laptop, different branding) has good comments, especially since the problems concerning the keyboard were solved. We can't exactly say the same thing from the Dells when we look at their forum though.
 
Whatever you get, Dell or HP ..

Try avoiding the ones with the Shared VRAM.

Most HP Desktop Replacements have shared video memory, as does the Dell Inspiron 1100.
