I have a Dell Optiplex GX260 and want to know if the following chip will work fine in it:

Intel P4 2.8GHZ/1M/533
SL7E2 COSTA RICA

This is the Tower version, not the SFF desktop type.

Please help me out. When I install it, will I need to clear the CMOS and reset the BIOS?

I'll tell you this.....if it DOES take , you won't have to do anything to the CMOS. The system will recognize it and set it up.

No. You would need a PL-P4P HW attachment in order for it to work. Without it you are left with Northwood CPUs.

these are all work PCs.

Ok, but that does not help me for the GX260 model.

Well, I'm not sure what you mean. All conceivable technical details are listed on the screenshot. Sure, it doesn't tell you the color of the CPU or if it has too much thermal paste on it... :D

Well, if the motherboard is socket 478, the CHIP is socket 478, it should work no matter what correct? Does the MB support 1mb cache chips, or does this not matter?

Why are you pushing this matter? Your comp don't support Prescott CPUs without hardware modification (the link I gave you). Other than that, you have no other option. Ofc you could fiddle with mobile CPUs (would also require an adapter). It cannot support Prescott. This matter ends here. Here are your options:

- stay with your current CPU
- buy the biggest Northwood you can get with FSB 533 which would be the 3066MHz one
- buy the Powerleap Prescott mod which comes with an adaptor with a CPU fixed on it (it cannot be deattached from the adaptor AFAIK)
- buy a mobile CPU with (again) a hw mod, although that would be illogical in this case, I've merely listed this option for the sake of completness
