So I recently got a hold of a Dell Optiplex 380

It's a pretty decent little system. Core 2 Duo E7600, 1GB DDR3, G41 PCH, 80plus silver 235w PSU (80plus silver was optional), one PCIe x16 slot, and one PCI slot.

However this was much too weak for gaming so I threw in a Core 2 Quad Q6600 (G0!) I had lying around, 2 sticks of 2GB patriot DDR3, 1TB WD Blue, and bought a EVGA GeForce GT 740 2GB single slot low profile card.

With the above setup it runs games pretty well. I do have a Xeon E5450 on the way though and plan on eventually getting 8GB of RAM. I would have preferred something a bit faster than the GT 740 but there isn't a card out there that is as fast and is single slot and low profile.

So far I've ran Mirror's Edge, Project Cars, Naruto SUNS 3, Dolphin emulator, and Final Fantasy XIII. I plan on running more games and will post results.

Below are the approximate average frame rates and settings used (vsync is always on, 16 tap AF forced in NVCP, highest quality texture filtering forced in NVCP, Quality AO enabled in NVCP).

  1. Mirror's Edge ~60fps Highest settings, 8xCSAA, 1440x900 (PhysX off)
  2. Mirror's Edge ~45fps Highest settings, 8xCSAA, 1440x900 (PhysX on)
  3. Project Cars ~30fps free practice mode, high settings, no AA, 1440x900 (slightly CPU bottlenecked)
  4. Project Cars ~40fps (very CPU bottlenecked) free practice mode, medium settings (high texture), no AA, 1440x900
  5. Naruto SUNS 3 FB ~30fps (game is locked to 30fps) no AA, 1440x900
  6. Final Fantasy XIII ~30fps (~20fps when transparency heavy attacks are used) NV driver 30fps frame limiter , shadow res=4096x4096, 2xMSAA, 1440x900
  7. Super Smash Bros. Melee ~50fps (~30fps with more complex attacks) VS mode, corneria, 4 players, 1.5x internal res
  8. Elite Dangerous ~60fps mixture of medium and high settings, SMAA, 1360x768
  9. Deus Ex HR ~60fps max settings, FXAA high, D3D11, Shanghai, 1360x768
As you can see it's a decent little "console". The Q6600 is holding me back in newer games and Dolphin, the E5450 should solve that. If I can't get 60fps in a game I can just limit it to 30fps like consoles usually do.

In conclusion the GeForce GT 740 proves to be a potent little card that can handle Xbox One tier resolutions and settings well it seems. Though the Core 2 Quad Q6600 put up a good fight it's age shows in some areas. Overall the system is relatively quiet especially when idle and doesn't put out too much heat.

UPDATE: The Xeon E5450 is a great CPU, Project cars now is locked at ~40fps at medium settings (no dips or stutters) and dolphin now runs locked 60fps too.

Oh yeah this is cool. Good job on low-cost S775 SFF gaming console. It's pretty amazing to me what this generation of GPUs can do.

Just added Elite Dangerous and Deus Ex HR results. Resolution is lower because I moved to my plasma.

That is a very nice set-up! I think you have the best LGA 775 console that I have seen.

Looking forward to seeing the results with the E5450.

Just got my Xeon E5450. Flashed my firmware with firmware from bios-mods.com which added support for the better E0 stepping, applied the sticker, cut the socket tabs with my x-acto knife and bam CPU was recognized no problem. The SSE4.1 instructions that were added with the 45nm shrink really make a difference now a days. Along with more L2 cache, a 400MHz core bump, slightly better uarch, and a 1333MT/s bus.

I'm very impressed with this chip and only for $31!

I think the GT 740 (formerly known as GTX 650) is a pretty sweet card for a console PC.

Current price: $66.99 After $20 rebate with free shipping:

P.S. Eventually Nvidia should release a Pascal based card (or maybe Maxwell) in single slot low profile that will be fully DX12 compliant and then it will be interesting to see how well E5450 (and the like) scale with a low level graphics API.

Not cheap by a long shot, but there are low profile GTX 750 tis out there:

With Maxwell and 2GB GDDR5, this should handle quite a few games going towards 1080p.

I don't think that card will work with the 10 liter Dell Optiplex chassis (re: the 3.5" HDD caddy gets in the way of the tall heatsink fan)

However, it will work in other Slim or SFF chassis (like the HP DC5800, which can actually take a dual slot low profile card). The 16 liter Slim Dell Optiplex can't take a dual slot low profile card, but it can handle a single slot with tall cooler (like the 750 GTX you linked).
