Dell Open Manage updates

I ran the latest Dell Open Manage update CD and it says there are BIOS updates for my server's motherboard and firmware updates for my RAID card... everything is working fine now.

Do you all usually update the BIOS and firmware on a live server? I was not going to update because I can't really risk the chance of the server going down because of a bad update, but I figured I would get other people's opinions on this topic.

Thanks.

updates generally get rid of bugs holes... If you are not having any problems what so ever then i wouldnt do it...

I doubt that anybody immediately updates just because Dell or Adaptec issue new firmware. However, be aware that your aren't up-to-date. I had one Dell server that began self-rebooting frequently until the latest BIOS was installed. I assume it was a compatibility problem with some Windows update. Also, things like RAID driver software updates can be incompatible with older RAID controller firmware.

Whenever I have to take a server down for major maintainance (like adding new drives), I'll update as much firmware as I can at the same time. And, of course, if you start experiencing hardware or software problems, installing the latest firmware and software updates is good place to start the repair process.
