Does anyone know who makes the M991 monitor for Dell ? It looks like a fairly decent monitor for $280 but I'm comparing it against a Hitachi CM772, which is hard to beat.

Thanks

Dell, like Compaq and Gateway etc. use a variety of OEM manufacturers so it is very difficult to tell whom the actual manufacturer is. This is very common in the industry.

Generally, Sony makes Dell's monitors, but don't know about the M991. I'd go with the older model flat-screen monitors. They are better than these never bubble furniture-like ones.

I dont think so. Just because a monitor uses a Trinitron CRT does not mean the monitor was manufactured by Sony. Even Sony uses OEMs for some of their models. KDS for example uses Sony FD Trinitron CRT's.

The M991 from what I can tell, is a 19 "Shadow Mask tube with a .26 diagonal dot pitch and possibly a KDS style faceplate. My wife uses the M990 Dell at work which is a year old but its faceplate and buttons are similar to my Viewsonic G773 and GS771. I like the Dell's 17.2" depth which is a good compromise between the short neck Viewsonic GS790 and the full length 19's at 18.5" plus it's priced right. The refresh rates aren't to bad but I can't find out what the clock frequency is. I'm not sure if clock freqency is what Dell's calling the Maximum Vertical Scan Rate or not. You guys know how vague OEM specs can be.

I really wanted the GS790 but it's in short supply and is priced in the mid $ 300's. By the time I get into the upper $300's, I can go for the Hitachi CM772 which is a pretty decent monitor from what I've read. If anybody has a better choice in a shorter length 19" besides the GS790 or the Hitachi's, I open for suggestions.

Thanks for the follow-ups :)

I've got the Hitachi, and couldn't be happier. So, that's my recommendation. :)

Uhm, go for the Hitachi, hands down, as compared to any "equivalent" Dell monitor..

I've got an M991 and a P991 right here.

I'm looking at the back but it doesn't say who made it. It just says made in Mexico. One big negative I noticed right away is that the VGA plug is attached directly to the monitor.

This may not be a negative at all. With any connector (BNC or DB-15) there is a possibility of an impedance miss match that could send ripples up and down the video cable. The ripples can be amplified by the video amp and show as shadows or ghosts after light to dark or dark to light transitions on the screen.

Most manufacturers are taking the connectors (BNC and DB-15) off the monitor all together and permanently attaching the cable to the monitor. By doing this they can solder the cable wires directly to the video amplifier board inside the monitor, effectively eliminating any chance of impedance miss match on the monitor end from a connector. An added benefit to a permanently attached cable is, you will never loose it, should you move your system. In any scheme there are trade off. The trade off in permanently attaching the cable is that if the cable should go bad, you need to send the entire unit in for service. My experience says that occasionally cables do break, but the failure rate of cables is very low.

Don't the cables usually get supplied by the manufacturer though? If there is a mismatch, it should be their fault then. I'd rather stick with a monitor that has a detachable cable than one attached just in case.

I have a friend who's an IT Mgr @ yet another Ausitn startup, but he uses the M991. The man's helped me on countless occaisions and defintely has his sh!t together, so as far as I'm concerened his word is gold. He's in absolute love with it and recommeneded it to me when he knew I was looking. He loves it so much he's going to buy several and he's also siad that it uses a Triniton tube, so I'd imagine its a Sony. Its also a flat screen. If had the extra money for it I'd buy it over the Hitachi CM715, but if you don't mind it (as I've seen the one he uses) I'd say get the Dell.

I researched the Dell some more and found it only listed 17" viewable compared to the 18" on most other 19's. Plus I really wanted the higher res'z and clock frequencies so I ordered the Hitachi CM772 last night from Dell and got a great deal. With the 10% off, free shipping, no tax and a $25 coupon, I got the Hitachi for $344 out the door. Whaaaaaaat a deal.

Thanks for all the help :D

WhoDeeny, then the guy must be lying to you because the M991 is not a flat screen. I just bought 2 M991s and 6 P991s for my company from Dell and can assure you the M991 is the curved version. The P991 is the Flat Sony Trinitron which costs about $400+. The M991 is $280. The M991 is a nice monitor though. One of our guys here says he is going to get one for his home.

I agree with Doggiedog. The M991 looks like is a plain jane Shadow Mask tube. Nothing fancy but it does the job and the price is right.

PS: Hey Dog, nice seeing ya. The 1ghz Slot A still going strong ;)

Well I just got screwed by Dell. My my great deal from Dell on the Hitachi CM772 with 10% off, free shipping and the $25 coupon, just got 86'd. They had the CM772 in stock when I ordered the monitor on Monday and got the email confirmation stating they were shipping today. Then I got the Dear John email stating it was now backordered until Dec. 27th, so I'm back to square one.

Good news is that there are a couple of Viewsonic GS790's around so I may try to grab one. What do you guys think ?
