Dell monitor showing nothing but vertical lines

I don't know if this should be here or in the video card section. Someone in the family is having trouble with their monitor or computer. The monitor is showing all white with some colored vertical lines. So I figured it was a video card problem but after unplugging the monitor from the computer, the lines are still there. So I thought the monitor was bad. Well I bring the monitor home and try it out on our computer and it works fine.

Why would it still show the lines after the monitor is unplugged from the tower? When I go back up there, I will install an actual video card and see what happens. He is using on-board video right now. I also tried messing with the settings on the monitor but when I pushed the buttons, the screen would turn black for a second, then back to the lines.

His screen looks similar to this except there is more white on his screen.

if problem exists after power on the monitor with nothing connected, chances are there's something wrong with the monitor itself (PCB fried most likely)

try a different power cable

That is what I thought too but when I brought it home and hooked it up to our computer, it works fine.

The only thing I can think of is it overheated. You see, he never shuts the computer or monitor off. So maybe during the ride home, it had a chance to cool off. I am going to leave it on here for awhile and see if happens again.

When things cool they flex [back]. It is possible the PCB has developed a weak connection and heat causes the problem to be worse.

Ya, an intermittent. Possibly an internal RF short, bad solder joint or even loose connector. Outside chance it might be readily fixable, but dis-assembly and inspection is required.

Is there any place I can take it to that will work on monitors? Will any computer shop look at it? Will it cost to much to have someone fix it then to buy a new one? If so, I may tear it down myself and have a look.

I had a Dell monitor that acted like that, would go away for a while if I switched power cables... but come back eventually... RMA'd it

Also had a Dell M1330 laptop that did that... but its due to the nvidia 8400M overheating problems

it's not worth the cost... manpower, at least an hour or two to strip down the monitor and look at the PCB... $20-$40/hour = you can buy a new monitor already
