Hey there. I have been putting together a new system with a mobo from a Dell 8200 desktop and a few other pieces of hardware. I just got everything in the mail and put it in the computer and for some reason the computer woun't go pass the Dell logo BIOS screen. The white bar at the bottom just fills up and it hangs there. No beep no nothing. What should I check/what can I fix in the computer?

Are you using a Dell power supply? I have heard they are proprietary.

You hear a lot about proprietary Dell hardware, doubt most of it. I've worked on a number of Dell systems.

You need to look further into that particular mobo and BIOS. My guess is that you need to either clear the CMOS or set a mobo jumper to configuration mode.

Easiest thing to try to start with (if you haven't already) is try removing the mobo battery for a minute, then put it back in and boot up.

Ok cool. The battery thing worked. The mobo now posts but once it does it says "Running Primary IDE setup" or something. Aparently it can't complete so it tells me to "strike f1 to continue or f2 to enter setup". If I hit f1 i get the same message again. What now? 🙂

PS: the computer is laying on it's side if that makes any difference.

Doubt no more

It's well documented, whoever thought this up should be shot for pulling this kind of crap.

It's the equivalent of wiring an entire house here in the US with 220 but use standard US outlets, & then not telling people when you rent it to them.

Viper GTS

Yes Viper that looks to be some useful info. The systems I worked on were prior to the date specified. Sounds like a shockingly shameful practice indeed.

jodathmorr, I would suggest you hit F2, enter BIOS setup and either find a setting that says "Reset to defaults" save and exit, or change the settings as you see fit. You can read up on BIOS settings here.
