Dell minus Windows Xp?

Is there any way I can get Dell not to make me pay $100++ for a copy of Windows XP that I'll never use? Can I just call them and order over the phone and tell them I don't want it, or that I don't want a hard drive, or something? Do they have any refurbs that don't include an OS? It's the only thing stopping me from getting another Dell. -_-

You can pay just as much and have them ship it with linux.

Can I have them ship it with nothing, or without a hard drive? I mean, I have 300 copies of Ubuntu and I'm not going to pay for another.

From what I gather, that link I posted, it comes with no OS installed. It includes FreeDOS ready to be installed.

as a matter of fact, they have that exactly. you can choose a computer with out a hdd and this also means without an OS. the best part is that you don't immediatly need to reinstall to get rid of all the crap dell puts on there.

How do I go about doing this? Can I just call them up with the model I want, without that option, or is there a specific model for that?

Check out the deals on their Optiplex. The lower end ones make nice desktops from what I've heard, and can be bought without the OS.

I _highly_ doubt Dell pays $100+ per OS license. They get some major bulk discounts.

Any saved money on my end is worth it. I know I'll never use the OS, so why waste money on it?

Absolutely. But I'm not sure if they make it easy to avoid paying for that license, whether you need it or not. MS has Dell on a tight leash in this regard.

Go to their website, figure out what you want to buy, call dell and say you want that system with out the OS. If the final price isn't cheaper and doesnt' come with out XP, then ask for a manager or what ever. They have to, by law, allow for you to purchase a computer with out an OS, ignore what their reps say if they say you can't, you CAN DO IT!!! 😛 GL

Sounds good to me, hope you're not fscking with me. Am I also allowed to say I don't want a hard drive? I mean, if I can get it without the OS for cheaper, I'll gladly buy the HD, because they're pretty cheap when from Dell, just wondering.

Build it.

Wanted to, but after looking at Dell's new AMD line, and their prices, it's the best buy, IMO. Especially with RAM at its current price. -_-

I'll pass. I don't need XP for anything, ANYTHING! No sense emulating. 😉

How would this affect the warranty? Not that the OP likely cares, but would you still recieve a warranty on parts alone? Seems like when it comes time for support or a warranty claim on parts they'd use you buying it with no OS as an out.

Why would you say that? For my posts consist only of the most concise, poignant, relevant, comprehensive information, are crafted to perfection and are written with upmost seriousness. For every post I craft, one mortal creature of this plane is exiled into, Oblivion.

You can buy n-Series machines that come with FreeDOS, but they work out the pricing so that it's the same or more than machines with XP.

What law is this? Companies can decide to sell things however they want, and if you do not like the terms of the sale then they can tell you to purchase elsewhere.

One isn't required to have to purchase the microsoft OS in order to buy a computer, that creates a virtual monopoly which is what it is.

Do you have any kind of link, I agree with what you are saying but do not believe it is a real law.

Dell used to offer a N-series set of machines, but they were only about twenty five bucks cheaper. Dell pays far less than $100 a license for XP. A quarter of that or less.

And what's wrong with that? That's $25 in savings!
