hi i have a dell inspiron 910 (mini 9). It has a broadcom 802.11g adapter. I am getting piss poor performance from the wifi 802.11b network at my house. all the other computers and laptops work fine on it. It says i have a strong signal, yet packetloss and data transmission is pathetic. It takes 2 minutes to load msn.com

If i plug an ethernet cord directly into the router, it loads msn in 5 seconds. Wifi works on all other wireless devices in the house. Ive tried updateing the drivers to the broadcom part in the mini 9, but havent gotten good performance yet.

solutions ive seen on teh webz are change the channel of the router, disable power saving modes of the network adapter, disable the firewall on the mini9 (which i dont want to do), or unplug and replug in the antenna to the wifi card in the laptop.

does anyone know why im having bad performance? I am yet to test on a wifi g, n, a or wimax. hopefully i dont have issues on those networks as well.

thank you for reading

May be some sort of compatibility issue between the router and the DELL. I'd suggest upgrading your Router to a cheap G router or better yet make the jump up to N.

figured. I went ahead and orded an intel mini-pcie Wlan card to replace the broadcom that is in my mini 9 right now. I took the mini 9 with the broadcom currently in it over to a friends house and connected to his 802.11g network and it was blazing fast.

this wifi 'b' network at my house is crap. Hopefully the intel wlan card has better performance....

thanks for the response, mpilchfamily.

thanks for that idea exterous.

I went into the router properties and changed a few of the wireless settings, like channel, output mode etc... Now ive got full speed!

fixed it! I was so frustrated and I already ordered an intel pro-n wireless mini pcie card to replace my broadcom. I guess ill just put it up on ebay now.
