basically i have a:

4700 series
P4-3.4

512 DDR2 (2 x 256 mem) (up to 4gb of mem allowed)(dont need to go that high from what i have read)

256 Nvida geforce 6800 Card

looking to upgrade to better mem.

the question is this:

my 4700 came with 512 gb mem... 2x 256 sticks. (not sure what mhz it is)

gonna upgrade to 1gb and have a choice of pc2-3200 (400mhz) and pc2-4200 (522 mhz)..

now i am seeing that some are 64m x 64 and some memory is 128 x 64.. does it really matter?

not sure what mhz i have in there now, so probably gonna buy either 1 gb of 400 or 1 gb of 522, should i just ebay my old 256 mem or keep the same speeds in the 1gb stick, (thus i would have, since i have 4 slots, 1.512 of mem.) dont know if its worth the extra 256 x 2 but .. your thoughts?

thanks again.!!

Can you not just buy another 512MB of memory? You want PC2-3200, since the FSB is running at 200 and you are not OCing (I assume with the dell).

I woud either buy another two sticks of 256 (cheaper), or ebay/FS/FT the current sticks and buy 2 512MB(better upgradeability, cheaper if you decide to add more later).

yea thansk... probably gonna buy the 1 gb stick of 533 mhz, only 180 dollars so not to bad. 2 sticks of 512 is 77 x 2 = 144. so 40 bucks aint to bad... and buying 2 256 seems kinda wrong.. hehe. i appreciate the though, just wanted to be sure..

You are much better using 2x512mb sticks than 1 1gig stick, not using dual channel mode does hurt the bandwidth hungry P4's performance. If you aren't gonna overclock, which you really can't anyway with a dell, there is no reason to get the 533mhz stick, because you won't be able to run it at 533 anyway, so you should get 2x512mb sticks of PC2-3200.

whats real bad is that i can get pc2-4200/ 512 (533 mhz) For 77 dollars. = 144.00 newegg
dell memory of pc2-3200/512 (400 mhz) for 94. = 188.00

since i know i have pc2-3200 /(400 mhz) and they are 256 apiece...

kinda stuck.....

I cant mix the mhz or pc2-3200 and pc2-4200 can i? (pretty sure i cant)

anyway.. your 2 cents.. please.

if i keep with the 4200 and buy 2 more 512 = 1.5 of mem (is that even possible)
or buy the cheaper on and chuck the 3200... ebay, door stop..paper weight??

lol

If the PC4200 is cheaper than the 3200, then might as well get the 4200. It will only run at 3200 speeds though. You could mix the 3200 and 4200 together for 1.5 gig of memory, but would probably be better off just using the gig of 4200 by iteself, and sell the other stuff.

hehe, thanks stevty2889,

yea i went with the 4200. for 150 or so after shipping and taxes, (sorry to have been a pain, man now i know how it is when my kids keep asking all those questions,(i am normally use to knowing the answer)

gonna ebay or toss the mem.. didnt think you could use them both at the same time.... but who knows. i need at least 1gb of mem, cause as of late during WoW i seem to be getting the error of file page memory issues and i dont know why it just started, but i am hoping that is just the lack of mem. (the icon says i can change that, just cant find the documentation to make that adjustment.).... so hopefully this works.

Once again, thanks to all who put up with this post. and i hope someone else who needs the same info can use the search button to find this helpfull!!

hmm, getting page file errors? is this only while running Wow? If so, then maybe the gig of ram will help, but there could be something else wrong. Are you running anti-virus and anti-spyware software? Running low on hard drive space? Have you run defrag or chkdsk lately?

hi again!
well i did some research last nite on the official BB, and one of the ideas was to delete the wtb and wtf files, (i moved them to a floppy and then deleted..) and i'l be damned it worked!! i use cosmos, so i lost some of my map notations, but thats no biggie. that was the fix. well i needed the mem anyway and at 77 dollars a pop that wasnt to bad.

btw, can i actually/really use 2 different types of mem? if i can, i might as well use them. (no loss either way ).

(at least all i need to worry about WoW is lag now!!)... thanks for the big help, and this is the one place i know to go to for help.. (so much damn knowledge here, which is real nice)

thanks!

You can use 2 different types of mem, they should work fine together. I have had 3 different types of mem working together at once. My gigabyte motherboard has 6 ram slots that can be used at PC2700/2100 speeds. I had 2x256mb of crucial cs2 PC2100, 2x256mb of Centon CS 2.5 PC2100, and 2x256mb of Kingmax PC3500 all working together.

wow six slots for mem?!?!? thought the most was 4.. nice!

ok... i am not planning on getting anymore mem... but if a sale comes up...

(of course i am trying to justify buying a fx-55 sys w/sli and building one.. (the deal on the dell was kinda good i thought and allows me and my boys to play..

thanks for all your help!!

fyi, i got the mew mem last nite, shut down and ended up removing all the cards (cause i couldnt get to those damn levers/holddowns. moved and installed mem, reput all the cards back (that gt6800 card was tuff to figure out how to remove). turned on and no screen and a very load fan from inside the comp....

unpluged, removed all the cards again, reinserted pluged back in.. system came up, checked mem.. 1.517 (or something like that) runs way faster!!

thanks for the help!!! again!
