I am thinking of buying a laptop for school and have become a fan of the Dell M1330 laptop. Its lightweight and really pretty! Also the reviews for it are positive. The problem is :it is a bit pricey. So I was told by a friend that Dell has good sales on memorial day.

Does anyone know if the sales are worth the wait? And also anyone have suggestions on laptops that are similiar to the Dell M1330 but cheaper....and wont break or crash after a month of use???

Thanks!

It's the same as the secret of telling a good joke... timing. Every major seller has something on sale every week. Some weeks are better than others. Start by knowing what you want your machine to do, and doing your homework to know makes about models that meet your need. Sometimes, you can find less expensive models that can be upgraded with RAM or a larger hard drive you find on sale.

Also, do further homework to learn which manufacturers and which models are reliable and which have problems. A "good deal" on an unreliable product isn't much of a deal, at all.

You can check pricewatch.com to get an idea of the prices for various systems and parts. Check the weekly circulars for your local vendors, and check the Hot Deals on this site and other deal sites' forums for info about current coupons, discounts and promotions.

For example, within the last couple of weeks, I posted two threads, one about a Best Buy closeout of a Compaq laptop for $309 and one about Fry's offer for 2 GB of RAM for $15 after rebate. Insert sale RAM in laptop, sell the original 1 GB of RAM for around $15, and I've got twice the RAM in an already great laptop.

You don't have to wait for a given day or week. Just take the time to learn about what you want. Then, grab it when you see it at a good price.

Good luck. :)

But also patient. Once you figure out what you want, wait for it and then jump on it fast.

Be careful with Dell. I am still waiting on my refurbished lap top. It was supposed to be delivered within 3-5 days. Eight days and still counting and no word from Dell. Check out their rating on resellerratings.com.
