I have inquired and received 2 different responses from Dell sales regarding this monitor. I've asked 3 times and they are pretty convinced that it is a Phillips made monitor. One sales rep was pretty sure it was a Samsung. None of them seems to know if it is a Shadow Mask, like the Samsung DF995. The blurb at their site says it is flat and square. Does anyone out there own this monitor and can you tell me if the screen is flat, and what the refresh rate is at 1152x864 or 1280x1024. Dell sure or evasive when it comes to saying what they have. Thanks for any help.

I'd suggest buying the 19" Dell Rebranded Sony..P991 or something like that -- can be had for under $300 shipped. Check the HD forum.

I am not totally sure on this friend. I do know, at Dell's website, you can get 20% off a Dell P991. This is the TRUE flat screen TRINITRON monitor (not LCD.) You can ring it up for $350 after rebate (19"). The M991 has .26mm DotPitch and does not seem to be a Trinitron (flat aperture grilled tube) at all! For almost any purpose, I do recommend the flat screen Trinitrons (aperture grilled). Not being a sales associate, I highly recommend the P991 Trinitron for $350. This is a very good deal for a 19" Flatscreen Dell (Comes in dark gray).

Rock on!

Yes I second the P991 trinitron, 19" flat. The refurbished is $350 - 10% off so it comes down to $315. The new is $450 - 20% off, which is around $360 if my math is right. I'd choose the new one... =)

I myself just purchased the 21" P1110 Trinitron for $640. Yes, paid $300 for only 2 more inches, but it will last a while. =]

I had a whole post and somehow I pressed a cool key combination that highlighted and deleted my post. Anyways my 17" Dell is 4 years old but it refreshes 1024 at 100HZ, 1152 @85, 1280 @75. Remember it's an older and smaller monitor. I've read the 21" Dell P1110 has an optimal resolution of 1280 @85 HZ. I'm thinking optimal is not maximum, I think and do hope we can get 100HZ out of 1280 and lower (for 21" and 19"). I wouldn't be too worried... I run a 3dfx Voodoo 5 by the way (currently), so the RAMDAC is high enough to push good refresh rates.

I like viewing large text in windows (in games I like large monitors/sharp resolution though) so personally I will probably be running my 21" monitor at 1152 resolution and it's maximum refresh.

Ahhh, but I'm a funny bird. Definitely against the grain. I have a real problem with the two horizontal lines that are present in aperture grill monitors. I know the dot pitch is better, I know the colour contrast is better and I know that the refresh rates are higher. As of last week I owned a Samsung 995DF and really liked it. I don't have it now and am thinking of getting a Dell system. Flat screen ShadowMask is good for me and flicker free refresh rates at resolutions mentioned above are what I'm looking for. So...any thoughts on the M991. God, wouldn't it be nice to just be able to get this info from Dell.

Dell's support right now (and their website)...is really big time CRAP. I have complained on the phone, via email, via snail mail. Try configuring a PC online through their site. The site should be used in a web-site development intro class for students to list 10-15 things not to do...their whole site design, is done by a 15-16 year old who is just learning about the web. You'd think a seller of PCs would have a decent working site, jesus...the money's gone to them. They don't even sell AMD chipset PCs, my dad still believes since Dell doesn't sell AMD - AMD must be terrible...sigh. Anyways, my dad has a 19" Dell NON trinitron monitor, and to him and I, there is only a slight curvature and I personally would have no problem using it. It's just to me the flat screen is nicer...but the non flat Dells are still very low on curvature, and those 2 lines can get to you if you keep thinking about them!

You will save some cash with the non flat I do believe, you can get 10% off in the accessories store..let's see that would be, new Dell M991 dark gray cabinet:
$310 - 10% off = $280. If it suits you, purchase! I'm at 17" right now so I wanted to make a large leap to 21". I'm hoping the footprint isn't too large, or I may need a new desk...I just can't wait to try out Counterstrike/quaek2 and hopefully get used to the dizziness. I know games like age of empires 2, and the like will look fully awesome on a 21"..Drool.

My dad has a 19" non flat, (maybe it's this M991 in beige?) but it is giving 100 HZ at 1024 resolution. That leads me to believe it's giving less at higher resolutions, or maybe his Riva TNT2 does not push a high refresh? What do ya think? I'll go look up TNT2 refresh max specs now..but I hope these monitors can push more. Maybe this is what is different in Sony's marked and Dell's marked Trinitrons...refresh rate is higher in Sony's! Argh if so.

Scratch that, the TNT2 can push very high refresh rates at resolutions even 1280 and above. Guess our Dell Trinitrons are lacking in this respect....I know they are just remarked Sony's though. I will see when it arrives soon, anyways both my Dad's 19" nonflat and my 17" flat are 4 years old, so I'm sure their technology has improved!

i back in march 2000 i was looking at 19" dells and went up to the dell outlet store to get a peek at them. the p991 was really nice and flat, but the m had a drastic curve to it. that may have been an m990. i will gaurantee you that it is a shadow mask monitor. dell has run two lines of monitor for a long time: a shadow mask and a trinitron. i myself have no problem with the wires on the trinitron, the only time i ever see them is in a word document.

No, don't get the P991 for 10% off!
Go through Small Business, and you will get 20% off either the P991 or P1110 Monitor (Awesome deal, I purchased the 21" P1110 for $640). You can get the P991 new trinitron 19" for $360 (originally $450).

I'm hoping these things refresh high, a message above said it could give 1600 @85HZ, sounds good. I hope it can give something near 100HZ at 1280!

To answer your original question, the M991 is a Philips monitor and not a Samsung.

Go to TCO Developement and do a search on Dell as the brand. The M991 is listed as being manufactured by Philips of Tiawan.

There are also other model numbers there in case you want to check out which model is made by which company. The "P" usually denotes a Sony monitor, but not always. You will see that two Samsung monitors are listed as a "P".

A weird questoin, if you do a search for just P1110 (I thikn the P's are the trinitron monitors, P991 and P1110 are Trinitrons wihle the M991 wasn't), it found a HP P1110 monitor - ANY RELATION!?
