I have a Dell M780 17" monitor that came with my dell (though i now use a computer i built myself), and the max supported resolution both in windows and in the manual is 1280x1024, except that when i installed linux and set it to that res, it displayed at 1600x1200. i dont know why it used that res instead of the one i specified, but i know that's what it was (a screenshot was 1600x1200). I figured that dell probably just uses the same hardware for all of their monitors and blocks out the resolutions that you didnt pay for. is that true? if it's safe to use that resolution, how can i "unlock" it in windows? i have an MSI GeForce 2 Pro 64mb DDR video card if that helps.

thanks,
Max

The easiest way to use resolutions not shown to the PC by the monitor in Windows 98 or XP is to download Custom Resolution Utility. You can find it on pretty much any freeware site. Alternatively, you can use a pair of pliers to remove the data pin from your VGA cable.

If you're in Windows 10, there's a way to do in the device properties. Or if you have an Nvidia graphics card, click "customize" under the resolution tab in Nvidia Settings.

I doubt that someone that posted that question back in 2002, is going to be waiting around for the answer that long...
