Dell LCD Questiom

My brother has the opportunity to buy a brand new dell computer at a huge discount. It comes default with two:

UltraSharp 1800FP 18-inch Flat Panel LCD

but he can upgrade them if he wants. I am sorry I do not know what upgrades are available. The video card will be coming with dual monitor ability.

I know very little about LCDs and was hoping to get some expert advice from this forum.

He plays video games and will be frustrated if his LCDs are not able to keep up.

Thanks a lot for any input.

Yeah, I'm definately looking towards the 1800fp's in the future, they are the best 18" monitors for the price and features in my opinion. BTW How much is he paying for the monitors?

Here's a reply of mine from one of the many 1800FP threads:

I've got 20/20 vision and have very strict guidelines when it comes to image quality/clarity when working with my computer systems. I am thoroughly pleased with the 1800FP, and I even bought a second one for my GF's pc. I don't notice any ghosting in games or dvd movies, and the quality is visually stunning. Even thought XP ClearType doesn't function properly on the 1800FP, I consider the text quality to be razor sharp in "normal" mode.

Two thumbs up!

He is looking to get the dual LCDs with a 2.4GHz machine (1GB RAM, 40 DB HD, 32X DVD/CDRW, etc.....) for around $1250.

I think it is a flaming deal.

The LCDs are fine for gaming. But, what video card is the computer coming with? And is this deal through the company he works for? The company my dad works (Merill Lynch) for is offering the exact same deal. The GFX card (quadro2) that comes with it sucks for gaming tho.

Hilarious. My brother works for Merrill as well. This is where he is able to get the deal. In fact, I started a thread in the Video Forum about the video card asking this question.

That was my gut feel, but I wanted to make sure.

Yeah, that does sound like a really good deal, esp since the monitors alone are worth about 1k, just make sure he gets a good graphics card, nothing lower than a Gf4 ti4200 or radeon 9500

Those monitors are somking, everyone on just about every hardware related forums goes nuts over these things, I for one have never used or seen on in real life, but they sure do look pretty over the internet.

🙂

These guys are made by LG, arguably one of the top 3 LCD manufacturers... it's hard to go wrong with them!
