Dell LCD 20" monitor goes black every time I try to do something

For some reason, when this Dell 2000FP LCD 20" monitor is hooked up to my system via DVI, it will go black for a few seconds everytime I try to do something (move a window, right-click on something, right-click on system tray, etc.). When it's hooked up via the analog connection, it's fine (however the analog quality is not as good with this "Super VGA" cable that I got at Fry's as it was with it's original VGA cable that came with it).

I don't have another system with a DVI connection, so I can't check to see if it is my vid card. Any ideas as to what the deal is?

It shouldn't happen as DVI has analogue interface as well as digital interface.

Try setting the output to digital before connecting the DVI.

Go to control panel Display properties->Settings tab -> Advanced -> navigate the driver options to "diaplay devices" and set digital output; Click apply and plug in the DVI.

You have to be quick since windows only give you 15 seconds before reverting the setting. But if you suceed, quickly press "keep setting", or it would revert back.

Guess it was my vid card. Decreased the resolution to 1152 X 864, and all is well. Not cool, though, as this screen is too big to have the res that low. Also, the vid card can handle 1600 X 1200 with the analog connection. Oh well.

Actually, I just got a tip to check the box for "Reduce DVI frequency on high-resolution displays." Did so, and all is good at 1600 X 1200!

got the latest drivers? If you do, maybe try a different version.
Also, last time you updated your drivers did you fully uninstall the older ones?

I think it's the monitor. Search Dell's website for LCD flickering. You'll find a lot of threads about it. It's something about EEID or EECD corruption or something along those lines. I just found a thread about it here in the Video section. Try searching there. This was happening to me. I have an eVGA 6800GT dual dvi. I fixed it by using the other DVI port.

OK. Thanks. Good to know. I'll check the drivers as well.
