I bought this laptop off Ebay for a mere 500 dollars. It's loaded with an on-site warranty that doesn't expire untill March of 2007. The only problem is that it came from the factory with SXGA+ display. The optimal resolution is (1400x1050). That is just way too small for a 14" display, and as you all know, anything other setting will look blurry. I could buy an XGA display for $375.00 new. Do you guys think it's worth it? I know I can't get a new laptop for even $1000.00 that would match this unit. I don't know what to do. I'm a computer technician but I've never replaced an laptop display. Is it real difficult? The blurriness does bother me quite a bit, and I don't making fonts and icons huge in windows to compensate. What would you do?

Just use native rest then up the DPI and zoom in on stuff in your word processor, browser, etc. Wear glasses if you have them. You'll get used to the res.

1400x1050 on a 14" laptop is pretty hardcore. That's 125 DPI, which is exactly the same as running 1600x1200 on a 17" CRT.

So, you have a 1400x1050 laptop. You don't want to use 1400x1050. You don't want to use a non-native resolution. You don't want to make the icons/fonts bigger. Well, I guess you'll have to replace the screen, then.

Paying almost as much for a screen as you did for the whole laptop is totally impractical, though. You might as well just sell the laptop on eBay again and buy something you like.

Personally, I say you're being way too picky. If the resolution is too high for you to see, then the blurriness of using a lower resolution should be too little to bother you. How is it that you can't read text at 1400x1050 but you can make out the individual pixels well enough to be annoyed by upsampling?

And what is wrong with changing the DPI in Windows? Your screen is 125 DPI, and Windows defaults to "Normal size (96 DPI)". Why exactly do you not want to change your display to "Large size (120 DPI)"?
