Dell Latitude X1 for college

I am taking a hard look at the X1 for simply for the portability. The lack of internal optical drives doesn't turn me off because I will always have wireless access on campus and can access my fileserver at home. But the 12.1'' widescreen conerns me a bit. I've never used that small of a screen for simple surfing and word processing. Is this a valid concern? Plus for the price of the X1 or less, I could easily get a gen-2 XPS with some of the $750 rebates Dell has been running. Suggestions?

I'd check out the 700m as well, since it does have a built in optical drive. Granted it's not nearly as light, but it's really not that heavy and it's considerably cheaper. I've never had a problem with the 700m's screen, some of the keys are smaller, but you get used to it.

Go w/ the 700m. You don't THINK you'd need an optical drive, but there's a reason that 99% of computers come standard with them.

It's LIGHT as crap...a vast majority of textbooks will outweigh it. Plus, the resolution is great & the screen is GORGEOUS. You won't mind the size at all, and it's not tough to type on, IMO. Awesome machine all around 🙂

You might also want to consider the Portable One UX laptop. www.portableone.com Excellent, excellent reviews (they have the link to the reviews under the UX laptop). Unparalleled build quality (carbon fiber). I just ordered the 14.1 version which is the MX just today. Can't wait to get it! Also free 2 day fedex shipping, and no tax if you're out of California.

I have been using the X1 for a couple of days now (just around the house) and I like it very much. No problem walking around with it in the palm of your hand. At 1280x768 native, the text is small, but not bad at all for surfing the web. It takes a few minutes to adjust (from my 18" LCD to the 12" Widescreen) but you get used to it pretty quickly.

As far as the XPS goes, those are heavy and will weigh you down. With the X1 and a backpack with a couple of books, you won't notice the weight difference. The standard 3-cell battery has yeilded me consistantly 1:45-2:00 hours. Using for surfing the web, office aps and some breif standbye time.

I have the external 8x DVD-RW which is actually almost as thick as the laptop itself. The new "D-bay" connection is a great improvement over some of their older connections and wouldn't be that bad to carry around "just in case"

The 700m is also another nice choice as I also looked at it when making my decision.
