I'm in the process of wiping/reloading a PII-266 lappy that I'm taking on a business trip w/me. Putting W2K on there.

It only had 64Mb of RAM but I cannibilized another 266 lappy we have at work at took it's RAM. :D Now mine has a whopping 128Mb.

Heck, it's a lot better than just 64!!!

It has a 4GB HD...so I can't really load too much on there. :( It's got a 13" screen (i think it's 13"...)_ and does 1024x768, 16-bit color. On this screen I can't tell any diff b/t 16 and 24-bit color anyway.

It's SO S_L_O_W. Login/go to lunch/go to dinner/come back/just getting to the desktop.

I know I can't run any decent games on there. I'm loading the original Diablo. That should enable me to waste a few hours at a stretch. ;)

I'm planning on using it primarily as an MP3 player. Got WMP9 on there. And as a repository for digital photos. It does have a USB port, so it's not a total loss.

That and surfing/email. It'll be adequate.

No real point to this thread...just in a sharing mood.

Emulators are your friend. That should be able to handle SNES9X or Genecyst.

Or you could always just load it with nekkid ladies. ;)

Help me w/this emulator stuff, please. Back when my FTP was up, someone uploaded a NES emulator and like 100 games...sadly, I never even tried it out.

What's an emulator do? Is it a shell program that makes the box think it's an NES/Playstation/whatever?

Essentially correct. You also need the ROM files, which you can only download if you legally own the game. :)

You then load up the emulator, "File-Open" the ROM like a Word document, and presto - you're playing old-school Nintendo/SNES/Genesis. I wouldn't try anything heftier than that on your P266. :p

:beer::D Woo-hoo!!! 266MHz of gaming goodness. :D

Ironically, the FSB on my gaming rig is almost twice as fast as the speed of this lappy's CPU.

On that lappy you could have just installed 98SE and it would have run better for what you are going to do.

You may be a diehard "98" hater, though. Whatever.

Have fun with your toy!:D

We can't tell you where to gets roms. But you can search for freeware roms. Some people actually create their own to legally distribute. But we can't tell you where to get commercial ones.

Hey, you're back!!! I'm assuming that since you asked for your vacation that you are now a calmer individual? Heheh, yeah, right! ;)

Windows98 and all of it's variants are truly The Operating Systems of Satan. Win98/Me/etc are true POSs' that eat memory like it's buttah. And w/only 128mb of memory to begin with...well, that answers that question real fast.

Anyway, currently installing Office XP. Hell, it'll be slow, but it'll be fully loaded, dammit! :D

I would have installed NT 4.0. It will probably run it just fine - although I have no idea if it will ever run your games

<-- knows nothing about games

Hmm...I didn't think of that, honestly. But now that you made me (;)), NT has no USB support, IIRC. One of the major reasons for me taking this old POS is so I can DL pics from my digicam and FTP them to a coworker.

IIRC, version 4.0 did contain USB support, but still no DVD support.
