You probably have the model with the NVIDIA Quadro 135M mGPU. If so, cut your losses and find another laptop. Even with the copper shim mod they will eventually fail...

^^^ This. It's a huge problem with this particular model...I know because I bought one used and that happened about 6 months later. Take a sledgehammer to it and move on.

Like above, bad solder bumps on the video chip. It's done for, not worth fixing.

Thanks for your replies.

I can pickup a tested and working motherboard for £25, would this solve my problems and worth doing?

Thanks

You can get a D630 used for ~$100 USD, im thinking about 60 British Pound. You can simply move your existing HDD to the new laptop, and done.

I would not replace a laptop mobo unless it was a big money saver. Digging into a laptop at that level is a major pain and fraught with peril.

Picking up an E5400 or higher would be better. They don't have the same video card issue, are quite a bit faster and in my experience more stable. I've used a D610, D630, and currently have an E5410 (work laptops).

I will do what's suggested and get a sledgehammer too it

Thanks

Did the D630 ever come with just integrated graphics? Those mobos should be immune.

I've replaced about eleventy billion mobos from Thinkpad T61s having this issue with integrated graphics mobos. Haven't heard any further video-related problems about them since.

The D630's and D620's came with either intel or nvidia for graphics. All the nvidia mobo's go bad eventually, but they can be replaced with an intel one if needed.

I don't think it's worth messing around with a D630 at this point.
