Hey folks,

A family member asked me if I could upgrade the RAM, and put win7 on their old Dell Latitude d610 laptop.

Before I said "yes", I checked about driver support and it looks like there are no Dell drivers for the d610 under anything after windows xp. Has anyone had any experience with upgrading these models to win7? I've seen some folks on other forums who sound like they've had success with just running the XP drivers in compatibility mode, but I was hoping to get some confirmation before I took the plunge.

Last D610 I ran Windows 7 on had all the drivers it needed out of the box on the Windows 7 cd. If there is something missing such as a nic card, just get the updated driver from the manufacturer. I do recall the video was problematic on those under Windows 7 if you had one with the ATI chip because ATI never made a Windows 7 driver for that chip. The Windows one worked but lacked any real 3D support.

I just loaded a D610 today with win7. only driver I had to find was for the 915gm video. the one on Dell's site for xp didn't work, wound up using one made for vista from HP's website.

Ihave this laptop and it works fine with out of box drivers. It will NOT have windows AERO support, so no glass windows for you. The PATA hard drive interface make this lappy very slow and painful. I use mine in my car for 2 things; music & GPS software.

Unfortunately it looks like one of the DIMM slots is dead so I could only upgrade to 1 GB of RAM. :(

However, all but a couple of the drivers were in the default win7 installer. Other folks seem to say that they picked up the wifi driver in the windows updates, so I hooked it up w/ a physical connection to do all of the bajillion windows updates, and off to track down the audio driver after :)

Final outcome:

Everything works!

I got everything but the sigmatel audio driver from windows updates, and I ran the audio driver from dell's website in win2000 compatibility mode. It worked fine.

As others have noted, no aero interface, the HDD is pretty bad, and sadly my 2 GB of RAM dream died with my 2nd DIMM socket, but it seems to be surprisingly workable for a single core, 1 GB RAM laptop.

Although I've noticed Ubuntu seems to run much better with 1 GB of RAM than windows7 does :p

I'll be sending it back to the family member once I image the HDD to give to them as a back-up. They're very excited!
