Dell Latitude D500 and D600 battery issues...

I have a Dell Latitude D500 and a friend has the D600. A week ago I accidently kicked the power cord which was plugged into my laptop causing it to, very forcibly, remove itself. I didn't think anything of it, because everything seemed to work. Now I realize that my cord no longer charges my battery. I can run the laptop off of the cord, but as soon as I unplug it, the dead battery light turns on and the laptop immediately shuts off.

To make things even stranger, my friend and his D600 is having the exact same problem (though he never kicked his or anything) which seemed to start after using my power cord for a brief period of time. He has bought a new battery, and both the 65W and 90W power cables from Dell and still can't get his to charge...

I am totally stumped, how did my possibly defective power cable break the charging capabilities of both of our laptops, and why won't a new cable or battery solve the issue?

at my job we recently got an order from a company with about 500 of these laptops. This is a common problem. Do they have lights when you hit the test button on the battery? Does it show the battery being charged in the bios? If not, it might be the battery. If the battery is charged and it still doesn't work with the battery, it could be the main board.

Also these are very prone to overheat from dust getting clogged in the heatsink, make sure to clean that out when you get a chance.
