I bought an old dell laptopp from office auction. The login password was not available so I changed the password using bootable XP CD and could log in. At the time of windows installation under repair option, there were may files which could not be copied from CD, probably becasue the CD look a bit scrathed.

Now when I start the laptop, wheh Loging windoe pops up for conformation, I am able to click using the touchpad itself, but after the login process is over and window desktop is dispalyed, I am unable to use click function of touchpad and have to use the left tab for clicking.

Is it possible that the problem is due to those files not copied from the CD?

I'm not really sure but I guess it's possible. If I were you I would just do a fresh install.

I'd suggest going to eBay and buying a replacement Dell OEM Windows XP Home/Pro install CD that matches the version on the COA sticker on your laptop and doing a fresh Windows install, troubleshooting a hacked up corporate install using a broken OEM Windows CD is a troubleshooting nightmare. I'm actually surprised any IT outfit worth their salt would let a machine go out the door on auction without nuking the hard drive. More than likely any software installed on the machine is not appropriately licensed for use outside of the company and who knows what sort of user/company data may have been stashed in a user's profile folder.
