HI

A friend of mine has a Dell Inspiron and I am trying to update to SP2.

I went to windows update and downloaded and installed alot of updates but now I get the service pack 2 option and it won't download and instal it just sits there.

It's on AC power, correct? Also, you scanned it for viruses and spyware using late-model software already? That would be a good idea, if you didn't yet... Microsoft AntiSpyware beta and Kaspersky 30-day trialware.

Yup on AC.

I scanned for spyware using the Microsoft Beta but I haven't done a virus check yet with an updated program. Thanks.

After doing a virus check, if that doesn't work I'll try safe mode. What key do you hit to boot you into safe mode. 😱

You all are great. Thanks for the help. If I can't get it to update I am going to format and replace Home with Pro but I don't really want to untill I've tried everything and you all are helping alot.

The F8 key is the one for Safe Mode. Hope it works better for you guys that way 🙂

I'm getting ready to run a virus scan... so we we'll see if thats that problem soon.

Please be aware that MS will support any problems you have installing SP2 on a computer for FREE. Just call them up and tell them what you need and you'll get to talk to a live tech support rep for help .... FREE.

Thanks thats nice to know.

Right now I'm trying to install the free cox security software but it won't go on......it is having massive problems.

By the way this is a real nice laptop. Its a Inspiron 9100. My guess its a desktop replacment. (massive thick) Its got a wide 17' screen/2.8 p4 with over 1000 L2 cash on the chip. I bet this thing was close to 3 grand last year. I have a toshibia notebook that is a 1.8 AMD and this one makes mine seem cheep. The feel of it and the LCD is somthing else.

Sheez the antivirus won't install.....hmmmm I'll try another.

The Kaspersky antivirus software won't install? If so, I have another resource you can try, a McAfee command-line scanner that needs no installation per se.

This computer is Virus and Spyware Clean for sure. WOW!!!

I'm going to try to load SP2 in safemode and if that doesn't work.......Sheez

SP2 will not install (isn't that a sign) lol

I have not liked SP2 ever since I installed, and it did install and then gave me problems afterwards. DLL Errors, etc. Usually a series of restarts and scandisk, etc. will fix the problem.
And my OS is running almost barebone. Some systems accept it with no problems. Although I do see a overall speed decrease in the system with anything below 700 mb of ram.

With the exception of SP1 and the sasser and blaster patch.

I've ran into those problems as well. Just wanted to add my 2 cents in and give my experience.
