Dell Laptop - Which is the best graphics?

I am looking at the Dell Inspiron laptop computers. Some come with the 256MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1400 HyperMemory and some come with the 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS.

Of course, some chipsets vary. Which has the better graphics? I know most all will do simple things like word processor, spread sheets...etc. But which would do better if you wanted to do some gaming on your laptop?

7900GS is the better graphics card, hands down.

Would that hold true for any of the lower GeForce numbers? Would any GeForce graphics be better than ATI. I am not that familiar with all the of the mobile graphics cards.

I see some of the laptops with this, 256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache

The 7300 and the X1400 are about the same.

Here is a simple way to guage it

Ati 9xxx ~= nVidia 5xxx (here, the Ati is generally better, even if the numbers roughly match e.g 9800 > 5800)
Ati Xxxx ~= nVidia 6xxx (Here, the nVidia is generally better, e.g. 6800 > X800)
Ati X1xxx ~= nVidia 7xxx (Here, it is roughly a toss up, but I think that the nVidia is better)
Ati X2xxx ~= nVidia 8xxx (I think nVidia is the only one on the scene with Mobile chips right now of this level, but you can expect that to change)

Bear in mind that these are generalities that will help you to decide, and not necessarily something that you should hold to be fact or anything.

Just for future reference, only the HD X2xxx are equivalent to the nVidia 8xxx series. The normal X2xxx series are just die shrinks or using different, better power-saving features of the X1xxx counterparts.

I didn't find out about it myself until I noticed a few notebooks being released with X2300/X2500 graphics cards before AMD released the Direct X 10 models. Stupid naming schemes create pains for everyone .
