Dell Laptop Special Keys in Linux

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 Laptop dual-booting Redhat 7.1 and Windows 2000. In win2k, the special buttons (volume up, down, cd skip, cd stop, ...) at the top of the keyboard work fine. In linux (XFree 4), the keys do nothing. Does anyone know of any programs or settings in xfree that can make these buttons work? Thanks.

Sounds as though those buttons are controlled by a software add-on to the Windows OS. A lot of companies do it that way instead of incorporating the button functions into the BIOS as IBM does. I think your best option is to call Dell and ask them if they have a driver that will enable the use of those buttons under Linux. Since the buttons are generally using a proprietary interface, I doubt that you'll find 3rd party software to make them work (but I've been wrong before). If Dell can't help you, try getting in touch with Sceptre. Sceptre manufactures the Inspirons for Dell and they might have a driver if Dell does not.
