Dell Laptop Slice Battery

Many manufacturers make a "slice" battery that fits across the bottom, back of the laptop in addition to the normal battery.
My question is, do I have to have a regular battery installed to be able to use the slice battery?
If so, does it have to be a working battery?
Do they work in serial so a dead regular battery would impede the slice battery?
