Dell Laptop AC Adapters - 65w vs 90w

Is there a difference between the 2? I've swapped these around for both my Precision M20 and Latitude D410 and they never give me a problem. I brought a 90w one overseas and it went up in smokes (literally) luckily I had a backup 65w one with me as well.

both were 100v-240v, maybe it was just a coincidence that it went up in smokes?

would the 90w charge faster? and would it eat away more on my electricity bill?

When I swapped out my fried Inspiron board for a Latitude board, I had to get a 90W (original was 65W) or else it would refuse to run my CPU at full speeds. Yes, I could force it up with software but I wanted to be cautious. I believe a 90W AC adapter does charge faster as well.

Some models require 90w (like my D820), but can run at a reduced bus speed with the 65w adapter. Most other models (D4xx,D5xx,D6xx) will run normally with both adapters, but like WobbleWobble said, using the 90w will just recharge the battery more quickly.
