It would seem to me that Michael Dell, the original custom builder, is considering buying some serious AMD stock !
Good for him !
All new comp. sales are down and he has dropped prices....BIGTIME,,
Here is a way to drop them some more !!!
Don't underestimate Dell..........He is a VERY smart guy...

Also, from a manufacturing standpoint, the more parts you have in inventory the more it costs you to make something... In this case you'd have to stock different mobos, chips, HSFs, AMD-approved power supplies, etc.

It doesn't make sense from a business perspective... If I were Dell I wouldn't bother to carry AMD procs because it just complicates business, causes more possible compatability issues, and may cause intel to be a less favorable supplier...

Dell has become #1 in desktops, workstations, and laptops without using AMD, so why start now? Most people who would buy AMD wouldn't buy Dell anyway... It's like asking Hyundai to start offering V8's...

i just think it's kind of pointless because most of the people who buy Dells don't even know or care about any of the diffs between a p4 and an athlon...

it's like asking the general public if they prefer honda's VTEC or toyota's VVTI... 99% neither knows nor care, to them it all does the same thing...

and if they're trying to influence the people that people ask these kind of questions to (us), those people already know the answer very well and whether Dell offers AMD or not, it won't make much of a difference...

if anything it could hurt AMD if they can't fulfill supply to meet Dell's orders and are "dropped" as a supplier... then Intel will point to that for the rest of time...

I'm willing to bet that Dell's decision hinges heavily on the nForce chipset actually. Dell and Nvidia are pretty close and I'm betting that the nForce chipset has proven itself worthy of Dell's attention, therefore, AMD is guilty by association. :)

I gave the AMD CPUs a slight edge. For question 3, I left it blank and stated the Celeron was the least value in the comment box. Intel is wise to retire it.

Anybody e-mail Dell about their flawed questionaire?

Also, I guess I still don't get why you guys would be so surprised if Dell decided to offer AMD's. Well, I suppose I do understand. You still think that Dell is being paid by Intel to offer Intel exclusively. * sigh *

The bottom line is that if Dell thinks they can profit by using AMD without damaging their reputation of quality, then they will.

I'd be surprised if they offered AMD because I believe Dell get's distinctly better pricing from Intel for their processors. They offer AMD and I'd be willing to bet Intel wouldnt be so willing to ship quite as quickly or at quite as low of prices.
If Dell was going to offer AMD they would have done it long ago, I very much doubt it will happen.
Intel is beginning to become seriously competitive against the Athlon in the high performance area again, so why offe AMD now?
If they had any intention of offering AMD it would have been done when they were clearly on top.

Irregardless of what the results are I'll be shocked if Dell risks their very good relationship with Intel just to sell a few AMD based processors.

I hope you guys vote objectively. Being biased on the poll won't help! I picked AMD.

Yah, I almost had a heart attack at seeing it, I have always regarded them as the best in OEM PC's, except in that they only sold Intel's. Hopefully that will change. I personally belive that they will not use VIa, wait for nForce if they do start selling AMD's.

What are you talking about? They are not as of yet...Maybe a person taking it to 2.2ghz with a water cooled system owns the 3dmark score, but that wont happen with a DEll system. Right now a 1.7 p4 perfroms equally with a 1.4 amd. That is a 300mhz head start and 150 dollars premium not to mention more expensive ram and PS.

wait until desktop palomino get out (which should be before northwood) at 1533mhz but will act most likely like a 1700mhz Tbird...what speed p4 will it take to beat that.

The 1.8 p4 may put it over the hump of the amd 1.4 and give it more of an advantage in the test but at the rumored price of 582 bucks DEll won't move much of thos if they have a hard time moving the cheaper ones. can you imagine 400 more bucks more some modest gains to a 169.00 dollar tbird 1400.

I think dell is starting to do some math...

I casted my vote for AMD! I guess Dell couldn't ignore the fact that AMD is a better platform any longer. Especially now that there is a reliable chipset supporting it (AMD760/AMD760MP). I just hope AMD keeps putting out the chipsets this time.

oh wow...dell considering AMD...what is the world comming to? hehehe jk

and...the AMD 1.0ghz is only about 50 cheaper than the p3 1.0...but you hafta buy OEM for both...and you need to do major price hunting...

I voted for AMD. It'd be nice to see Dell offer AMD systems :)

I do belive that VVTi has infinitly variable valve timing, while VTEC does not... but I also remember something about the VTech in the S2000 having the infinite system, but over all I would say I prefer BMW's Double VANOS :)

i knew some smartass would say something like that :)

you can buy a VTEC controller to have it always on but for the price of the S2K it better have the infinite system... either way, i'll take twin turbos over high-tech valve timing any day...

haven't read anything about VANOS, where does it fit in the picture?

I liked those Nissan 300zx twin turbos myself, but yeah, Toyota would have to take my vote on that one.

Er.. Nforce..
I do agree with the people who said that Dell custys don't care... they don't. Computer nerds who 'care' about thier computers, make em themselves. AMD, Intel, Pentium, ... er.. what's a AMD? I know a lot of people that think Pentium MEANS computer chip.. so whatever to dells rigged poll. They should be more professional than faulty HTML pages... sigh
