I assume this is the Inspiron 9200

Great. Can't wait to see your review here next week so I can make up my mind and buy/not buy this laptop.

With the lateset deals this beast has dropped to $1274, an awesome price.

Did you get the high res screen? Trying to decide if I want the 16x10 or 19x12

No I just took the basic screen as my eyes aren't what they used to be.
UPS has it now. Supposed to be here Thursday:roll:. Probably Friday:D
I'll give a mini review after I get it.

Mine finally moved into testing. Hopefully it ships by the end of the week. I ordered the WUXGA screen (1920x1200).

**edit**- Just moved into boxing. They sure don't test them long. :)

I'm pretty sure the only options are 1440x900 or 1920x1200. There is no 1680x1050 option on the 9200.

DOH

You are right!

That's my wishful thinking The 1680x1050 is perfect as some web pages are still designed for 800x600, you can get two perfectly on a screen. 1440 seems too small for a 17" screen and 1920 almost seems to big.

I tell you, I'm so on the line with this laptop, one user that's not pcmag dell hwore says it's great and I will probably drop my powerbook/thinkpadT42/I9200 debate and jump on the big I9200 train.....

some guy over at notebook forums already has his.

Says the screen is wonderful and seems happy with it.

Says the sound is great, and looking at the service manual the 9200 has a built in subwoofer.

I did not know that!

He's posted some pictures that are pretty bad, look like they were taken with a cell phone but the screen looks bright and beautiful.

Don66, are you the same Don from hardforums who is getting one this week?

I am the same Don..
I have been playing with mine for around 2 hours now.
I really like it.
I am going to do a harddrive switch and memory upgrade.
I like the screen very bright and no dead pixels
Since it's probably going to take awhile to dial this beast in I'll post my own
pics later.
Overall it feels solid, there is some light leakage when windows is booting up.
Not bad enough to complain..
On a scale of 1-10 I'll give it an 7.5
It's a nice lappy.

Hey guys. I set up a forum just for i9200 users. You can access them at www.i9200forums.com. My forum for the x1000 (here) was a great success so I followed that formula.

Just set it up this afternoon so feel free to start posting and adding some topics. :)

trikster2- I would go with the i9200. I have had great results with a dell laptop and have never even needed to use their service. I really like how the 9200 looks especially with the WUXGA screen.

You're very lucky to have had no problems with Dell laptops. I've had three, and all had at least several problems of varying severity, and after dealing with Dell's support unsuccessfully on a number of occasions, I feel like I've been through the wringer with them. That's why I will never deal with them again. It's not the crappy build quality, but the crappy support. Go to an online opinion forum like epinions.com and you'll see plenty of pissed-off people, more than you'd expect for a company that's got its act together. YMMV, obviously.

Well, after using it for a couple of days, I'm really enjoying it.
I can recommend this laptop to anyone that's looking for a 17"
She's awsome, and I'm glad I decided to buy one.

Don!!!!

Don't leave us hanging.

Picts? How do you like the 9200 after a week?

How's the keyboard? Does the entire keyboard flex in while you type?

How sturdy is the back of the screen? Does it pass the trikster2 flex test: hold an edge with your thumb and gently push on the back of the screen with your fingers (while the screen is on) does the screen change in the area you are pressing?

Thanks!

Sorry works been a biatch lately.
If it was a female I'd tap it:evil:
The keyboard is very solid.
Only thing I miss is a numpad.
No flex in the screen it's a metallic back.
The screen stays uniform no changes.
The screen is BEAUTIFUL.
As for pictures I have them but, photobucket.com locked my account for the rest of the month too much bandwidith.
I need a new place to post em at.
This is just a solidly built machine..

Hi,

I got my 9200 (1.8GHZ,512MB,8XDVD-RW) for two days now; the build is very sturdy: the screen cover(screen not affected by cover touch), the chasis; key board is ok (not quite the business type); stereo sound is very good compared to other inspirons(I got 3200,4000,5100 !); in fact the whole front design is quite thoughtful, everything is visible and easy to understand; however, you could still hear the familiar (slight) fan noise on most inspirons. Watched a DVD and man it is  wide-screen effect is awesome; battery seems to last 3+hours; I actually feel the thing lighter than my 5100, not bad. The wide 17" is just a god send for me since I use it to display my real-time stock pricing quotes; man I am now able to have 5 pages of stock lists up on the same screen !!! 17" is really too big for normal browsing though (somebody needs to write a browser to have dual pages). :) Have not tried the 8X DVD-RW; just ordered some 8X DVD-R to come soon next week. Speed-wise, unfortunately, dont think it is as fast as a high-end P4 (even without HT) because things seem to run a bit faster on my 5100 with P4 2.6GHZ; also tried some not-so heavy duty games; seems fast enough for me. so all in all, I am pretty satisfied; man that screen really kills me. BTW, I got the machine in a week from ordering to receiving; this is shortest time for me this time (less testing time I think) compared to my other inspiron purchases. Well, hope you get yours soon.....

For posting picts:

www.tinypic.com

No account, no login, but also no privacy, can't have everything.

And yeah the bandwidth will cap out. No harm no fowl though, they don't ban you or anything.

THANKS speedy and Don66 for the updates!

I've been through the tech/service manual on Dell's web site. Looks nicely built. Was surprised that it has a cool subwoofer tucked in there. Neat.

The back is really metal? Did either of you get the funky clip on LCD backs? Do those replace the existing cover or go over the existing cover.

Thanks again for all the updates!

Sorry, did not get the funcky clip (dont even know there is one actually); you know what, 9200 actually reminds me of the apple Powerbook G4;9200 has a metallic silver upper body with milky white triming all around and a black chasis base. It just looks very slick...
