Dell Inspiron 8800 Desktop Exploded

After fixing my girlfriend's laptop from her last catastrophe, I leave for 3 weeks and her computer dies again, with a completely different problem.

She's had a Dell for about 3 years, and in those years has had her motherboard, memory, and monitor completely replaced. Today she went to use it and her desktop resolution is about 5 by 5 pixels and won't change back. If you attempt to make changes to the desktop display settings, the screen will just go black.

She does nothing but browse the web, and I just fixed all her software so it's definitely a hardware problem.

She's running on Windows XP Professional and I think she has one of the NVIDIA mobility cards frrom 3 years ago....I think its called a GoForce.

She's going to call Dell, but she's not exactly knowledgable on computers and Dell tech support has made her problems worse before they got better, usually. Plus it's better go in armed with some information. I am not physically in the same state as her at the moment, so my troubleshooting is limited, plus I think it's got to be hardware.

Any ideas or anyone else have this happen to them?

Thanks,
Chad

Tell her to plug in an external monitor. If the problem persists then it is most likely the video card.

I don't recall if the vid card on that model is separate or integrated into the motherboard.

Good idea on the external monitor, think there is one in her house. I'll tell her to try that tonight. Thanks for the help.
