Also looking at a Dell 700m for $990 shipped brand new.
1.6GHz, 12.1" screen, 512MB, 40GB DVD

This will be used as my primary machine. It will mainly sit on my desk at home, as I plan to use my exisiting 21" monitor and keyboard/mouse at home. Will take it on the go sometimes. Was leaning towards the 8600 b/c of 128 mb vid card. Don't game too much on pc, but was thinking of Longhorn in the future...

Thanks!

Well, if you plan on gaming at all the 8600 is your only choice. The 700M uses Intel's Craptacular Extreme Graphics. If you plan on taking this on the go though, the 700M is a much better choice; that 8600 will be a bit of a boat to carry around. The video card is quite nice on the 8600 and the battery isn't bad either.
The 8600 is a much better choice technology wise, but the 700M will really be a portable dream compared to the 8600.
