Dell Inspiron 8500 Heat Question

I use my laptop a lot to render stuff which typically maxes out my CPU usage for several hours at a time. I was told this was not good for my laptop as the fan can wear out and my laptop can overheat. How valid is this? Would the warrenty cover such a thing (CompleteCare 3 Years)

Dell Inspiron 8500, 2.4 Gig CPU, 512 Ram.

Have the same laptop...

What temperatures are you reaching? Try using i8kFanGUI to monitor the temps...

As far as i know, even if the fan fails, the CPU will throttle down in order to prevent damage. And yes, damage by fan failure should be covered by your warranty.

To lower temps, try raising your laptop by putting a eraser under the top left corner.

Also, to run your laptop cooler, (and safer), you can buy a external notebook cooler which runs off the USB ports. Try searching newegg for one.

Thanks for the tips! I'll check out the usb cooler (right now I just have a fan pointed at my laptop when I render).

Instead of pointing a fan at your laptop, raise the top left end about 1 cm and use i8kFANgui

on a side note...

i just opened and cleaned the cpu fan on my inspiron 8500 (unscrewed 2 screws on the bottom), and cleaned the heatsink...

there is a 6 degree celcius temp drop !!
