I just formatted my Inspiron 6000. I re-installed the ATI x300 driver but couldn't find any driver for the display. Right now it say "Default monitor" for Monitor when you right-click on desktop, properties, settings, advanced, monitor. Also, there's no color profile listed for "Default monitor". Is this the way it's supposed to be? At max resolution 1680x1050, it looks very nice but the text is too small. At any lower resolutions, it's quite blurry. More, under Monitor in Device Manger, I see "Default Monitor" listed 3 times. I went ahead and changed to "Plug and Play monitor" I guess it shows up 3 times because the video card can support ouput to an external LCD and TV besides the panel itself.

Also, in Device Manager under USB, there are 5 USB Root hubs and 5 controllers but I only see 4 USB ports on my laptop.

Last question, I bought a NEC DVD burner off Newegg and upgrade the DVD/CDRW that originally came w/ my Inspiron. It's working fine so far but in Device Manager it shows up with an underscore before the word "NEC". Anyone else has it come up like this?

I do not see anything wrong with your setup. I have an LCD monitor and it's also showing as Plug & Play Monitor or default monitor. But it should only be shown once and not three times. Go ahead and remove all three and when you reboot it will detect again and hopefully it will be showing only once. Leave the USB hubs and controllers alone. They are OK. And same thing with the new DVD/CDRW drive.

Thanks Jiggz. I believe the monitor devices showing 3 times are supposed to be that way because there are a 15-pin plug and a S-video output so I could either connect it to an external LCD or a TV/VCR.

I'm just not sure if I did something wrong when installing the ATI driver. It should at least at a driver for the LCD panel like, WXGA/WSXGA or WSUXGA etc. I don't remember what resolution it was when I still had my old HD in it but it didn't look as dull as it is now. Maybe my eyes are getting worse, lolz...

About the USB thing, above 5 "root hub" entries, there are 4 "usb controller" and one special "usb controller" This special one says USB 2 in it. The other 4 doesn't so my guess is it controlls the other 4 like when you add a usb hub (in this case it is an internal usb hub)
