Dell Inspiron 6000 Graphics

Looking at the specs on Dell's website, it is available with the x300 card (64 or 128 meg variety).

Looking at the 9300, it is available with the nVidia 6800 256meg card.

Is it possible to buy a mobile 6800 256 meg card and install it in the Inspiron 6000? I mean physically possible and recognizable by the computer.

I am not afraid to void the warranty or disassemble the computer to do so.

Anyone ever do that?

I believe it is not possible to do that. The Inspiton 6000 uses a different motherboard than the 9300. Hence, which is why the size difference in both laptops. The Inspiron 6000 was made for mid-end users if i'm not mistaken, while the 9300 was made for high-end.

The biggest problem you'd encounter (besides finding a place to buy the mobile GPU) is getting an appropriate cooler/heatpipe. I'm relatively sure that the Inspiron 6000's X300 cooler won't sufficiently cool a Geforce Go 6800. Futhermore, you probably couldn't physically fit the cooler that comes with the 9300 into the 6000 (assuming you could even find one). Thus, unless you'd like to engineer your own custom heatpipe for the 6000, you're SOL.

Yea, SOL would sum it up. I have been reading the threads with gaming laptops and it just isn't there with portability. Perhaps in the future, but until then, the 6000 will do.

Look at the site in my sig for information on MSI 1029, Asus and Acer models that use the x700 or GeForce 6600 GPUs.
