It's helpful to try to list some specs with these sorts of questions. Here is what I have found on your model. Please let us know if yours differs from this:

Processor
Processor type Pentium Dual-Core E2160
Processor speed 1800.0 MHz

Primary Graphics Chipset Nvidia GeForce 8300GS
Video Bus PCI Express
Video Memory Type DDR2

Drive size 250.0 GB

Number of PCI slots 2.0
Open PCI Express X1 Slots 1.0
Number of PCI-Express Slots 2.0

Memory size 2048.0 MB

Operating System Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit)

Do you have the regular version or the slimline version? (this will determine what power supply, if an upgrade is necessary)

As far as upgrades, we would want to know what tasks on the computer need to be improved (can't run certain games, too slow, etc.) and how much you have to spend. Let us know if you are planning from ordering from a specific store.

It would cost $200 for that upgrade.

$20 Q6600 CPU
$27.50 2X4Gb DDR2 800 ram
$27.50 420 watt PS
Around $125 for GTX 750 w/2Gb ram

Maybe better off selling it & get something else.

One caveat with build is that is that he now has 32-bit Windows. Now, if he can "get" a 64-bit Vista and use an app like Jelly Bean to get the key that's on it, the 64-bit version will work with the same key, at possibly no cost.

One other caveat would be that he would need a better cooler for the Q6600. It came with a much better cooler than the Pentium stock, and even that kept it pretty hot. And while the Q6600 was a fine CPU, it really shines when pushing it up over 3 GHz, which would require a motherboard that allows overclocking. I am also not sure about the what type of cooling is in the case, other than it is probably pretty quiet as is, since it's a Dell. So you may want a better case fan.

And I would to have an upgrade chance and not add an SSD. So, figure $100 for a hard drive that is the same as your hard drive now.

And don't forget that support and security updates for Windows Vista ends in a little under 2 years.

Just some things to think about THTxx1xxGUY.

Burpo, you need to do some reading before you tell people to buy things that may or may not work for them:
The Inspiron 530 has two variants of motherboards, both made by Foxconn and based on the G33M series. The G33M02 which supports up to Core 2 Duo processors and the DG33M03, which supports up to Core 2 Quad processors.

Inspiron 530 systems sold with Pentium Dual-Core or Core 2 Duo processors can not be upgraded to Core 2 Quad processors without adding at least a 350W power supply and swapping motherboards to the DG33M03 motherboard. The reason the G33M02 doesn't support Core 2 Quad processors is because it only has 6 voltage regulator ICs, the DG33M03 has 11.

Also, see here
The Inspiron 530 with a Foxconn G33M02 motherboard, supports the following Socket LGA775 processors :-

Intel Pentium Dual-Core 2140 (1.6 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core 2160 (1.8 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200(2.5 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 (1.8 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 (2.0 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E5200, 2.5GHz, 2MB, 65W, M0
Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 (1.86 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) 65nm
Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 (2.13 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 (2.33 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.66 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 (2.80 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8400, 3.0GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0 45nm
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8500, 3.16GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, C0
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8600, 3.33GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0
Conroe E6850, 3.0G, 4MB, 1333FSB, G0
Conroe E6700, 2.66G, 4MB, 1066FSB, B2
Conroe E6600, 2.4G, 4MB, 1066FSB, B2
Wolfdale E5700 3.0GHz 65W Dual-Core

Prior to installing the processor, check that you have BIOS Version 1.0.15, or higher installed, when support for new Intel CPU's was added.

So a couple things:

1. My heat output argument is relevent, if you have tecnhical details that can show the OP that is would handle the heat output of such a chip as the board does not support a Q6600. A Q6600 has a TDP of 105W, whereas that Pentium is only 65. Consdiring the fact that this CPU is only available on the correct board, and only with an upgraded BIOS, that is a big enough jump for me to be overly cautious about assuming the stock HSF would work.

2. You can ONLY updrade to a Quad Core if your motherboard came withe the correct board. Here is a response one person's inquiry:
The Dell p/n ORY007 indicates it's a G33m02 motherboard, also the default PSU should be a 300w unit.

The ORY007 motherboard does not support Core 2 Quad processors

Edit: also from the same link, you will see that one board only supports 4 GB of RAM, the other will support 8. Just remember that they are DDR2 sticks, which will not be cheap ($150 if you buy new).

My bad I thought there was only one board..

I didn't tell him to buy it. I estimated what such an upgrade would cost. Even if he has the right board, he's better off getting something newer..

Agree with you there. It's a decent computer to give to someone in the family who has less, but much upgrading would be a waste of money. The big kicker, believe it on not is Vista. If it was new enough to run 7, it would be worth it since it would have DDR3 and an OS that could be upgraded to 10.

Can't believe they are offering a 14-day warranty on that. Add in the memory he has now and that's a pretty good upgrade, plus power supply and video card.

Buy a new computer. Not worth upgrading yours.

It would cost $200 for that upgrade.

Yeah. Considering that you could get "refurb" Acer Haswell i3 PCs with 4GB of RAM and a 1TB HDD and Win7 64-bit included for $220 + tax/ship, it's not worth dropping any money on that Dell.

Maybe if you can find a $20-30 used 2x2GB kit of DDR2, that might "ease the pain".

Btw, Burpo is wrong, you won't find a 2x4GB kit of low-density DDR2 (what Intel Core2 rigs need) for that price. They're all "AMD-only" (high-density) kits coming from China, for that price. At least that I've seen.

Lol.. HP Optiplex? Now there's a company that knows what they're doing! A Dell with the HP logo above it.. lol :D

Here's Dell for $110 w/Free shipping, but it looks like the OP was just a drive by, & all this work/research was for nothing.

I wish Newegg had the resources to look at what they are letting people to sell on their site.

Burpo, wouldn't that Dell be a bit limiting on video card options (needing a short card)?
