Dell inspiron 5100 problem!

Ok, my friend has got an inspiron 5100 laptop from dell. And has just txt to say she cant get online. There is no dial tone recieved on the laptop. She's tried it on different lines around the house, but still no joy. Yet her mums laptop works on the same lines. She's changed the cables etc, but still nothing!

Can anyone think of anything other than a duff modem or jack? She's ordered a new modem, but will take a WEEK to turn up!

Sounds likely that modem is screwed, but cant see how! anyone got any suggestions?!

cheers!

That's exactly what happens when the modem takes a surge down the phone line. It fries the isolation transformer.

The modem is fully functional but it can't "hear" the phone line. You need to replace the modem.

Penguin may very well be right, but I wouldn't give up quite so fast. I'd go into Device Manager and uninstall the modem, reboot, and let the Dell install the modem (via windows) again.

Ensure she is using the right phone jack (if there are two on the back of the laptop) for the phone line "In" connection.
