having a hard time choosing between a D600 and T40. Does anyone know the return policies (who pays shipping, restocking fees, how long to test drive the laptop) for both Dell and IBM. Might just order both and then pick one if it's not too costly.

Thanks,
Mike

with dell:

if you don't like it, ship it back within 30 days of the invoice date and get a full refund, no restocking fee. I don't think they pay for return shipping though.

note that the invoice date usually the day they ship it out, so if you have 5 business day shipping you really only have a few weeks to play with it, but that is usually enough to see if you like it and detect any defects.

wonder if it's worth the trouble... i really like the design of the T40 but the specs on the dell are a little higher with regard to the vid card and HD. just gotta bite the bullet and pick one i suppose.

thanks!

I have a dell inspiron 600m personally and I love it. Everyone here seems to love the IBM T40, and I suppose if price didn't matter I might have gone with one. I got my dell for around 1200 after rebates and discounts.

specs:
P-M 1.4ghz
256mb ram (upgraded to 640 via crucial)
30gb 4200 rpm hdd
64mb ATI 9000m
14" XGA screen

price included 3 year next business day warrenty with complete care.

I have contacted their tech support twice, both times they were helpful and prompt (although from india if you care, no problem understanding their english).

Only 1 minor problem, the left side of the keyboard had a little too much give to it, put a small piece of paper folded over twice between the keyboard and expansion card slot and now it's perfect.

RAM slot on bottom tends to run warm.
