HI
Looking to retire my nearly 8 year old Dell xps. Over the years I ugraded to 8 gig ram, 256 gig ssd, etc. Problem is the machine shuts off when moving it.
Looking or a machine with minimum 8 gig ram, 256 gig ssd, backlighted keyboard and 15 to 16 inh HD screen.
Because of good experience with Dell products I keep looking at Dells. BUT,, there is Lenovo,Hp, Asus, etc out there.
In your opinion and experience, what brand has the best warranty support, service, etc. I kinds shy away from HP cause the last two I had both died at 13 to 14 months, just after the warranty expired. That was 8 plus years ago and I assume HP quality has improved.
Your thoughts, good, bad, etc.

I'm a little sketchy on HP laptops, and Acer too, they seem (their consumer lines) not well engineered for longevity. I've used Dell consumer and Lenovo business-line laptops, and they seem to be built alright. Currently using a Lenovo with an A6-6310 (somewhat dated AMD APU with a quad-core, "small core" CPU and integrated graphics on the CPU), that I swapped the 500GB HDD for a 240GB SSD. The chassis seem to be holding up, tossing it around in my bed. My Acer V5-131 didn't hold up so well, after 2 years or so, it's basically semi- falling apart.

To be sure, this "Dell XPS" you are talking about, is a laptop rig? You want to purchase another laptop, as a replacement?

Laptops, though I've owned a few, are not my forte, so I'm sure someone (RossMAN?) with more laptop experience will chime in shortly.

HP has decent warranty support, though, even if their laptops don't last much past their warranty period.

If I were blindly going out to purchase, I'd probably get a Dell, with a Kaby Lake i3-7100U, and try to get one pre-installed with 8GB DDR4-2400 and at least a 240/256GB SSD, and of course, Windows 10 64-bit. Bonus for Pro, but I don't think that there are any additional features of Pro worth going out of your way to get.

HI My old Dell is a Dell Studio XPS 1640 laptop. I want another laptop. I bought it as a refurbished back in 2009. It weighs a little over 8 pounds. My forearms look like Popeye's arms!! LOL Built like a tank!!!! It's getting harder to get replacement batteries, etc. Power brick is 90 watts plus. When using it on battery only I get around 90 minutes before it says,, "feed me!!!" LOL

This caught my eye at best buy. For the features and ssd, ram, etc the price seems good. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-in...olid-state-drive-gray/5606500.p?skuId=5606500

Honestly, that whole thing looks really sweet. I'd say, if that's in the budget, go for it.

Edit: More specifically, it seems to hit all of the feature highlights:
8GB RAM - check
256GB SSD - check
1080P screen - check
Wireless AC, BlueTooth, HDMI, USB3.0 - check, etc.
and Backlit keyboard - check
Plus, it's a Dell, my and your experience is that they've been dependable.

Reviews are excellent, 95% recommended it to others, 4.5-star rating.

I'd say, unless someone else has some alternative ideas, I'd snag one while the $100-off is still good.

I have owned Dells and Lenovo Business notebooks and both have been excellent and the few times I have needed it Lenovo was by far the best experience.

Lenovo Thinkpad broke late on Thursday called service at that time. Received shipping carton Friday Morning early and shipped it to service center in Atlanta, GA. Received it back Monday Morning good as new with a new motherboard.

Stick with Dell or Lenovo. If you want something that will last another 8 years go with the business lines.
