Quadruple free memory:

This system includes 3GHz/800 CPU,120GB serial ATA, DVD, CDRW, Floppy and everything else "minimized" Dell home currently has free shipping and as always no tax in most states

Still not cheap by any means but considering that the RAM is worth alone somewhere between $300 and 400, I'd say this is pretty good for a gaming pc.

I don't think to many people would plan on gaming on the base FX5200 graphics card, but the Radeon 9800Pro is only a $130 upgrade which is a pretty good deal.

Good point - though I was only trying to point out the base system - heck if you want a killer system you can get this with radeon 9800xt pro 256(+$390) and 8xDVD (+$209) still for just over $2G

I bought this rig.. with the FX 5200 (dog I know)
Called 3 days after it arrived and got on the phone (after and hour) with Ms Save-the-Sale.

Told her I'm gonna return my XPS - $2,000+ system b/c the graphics card is not the quality that I expected from Dell. bla, bla, bla...
"t's partially my fault"..I tell her (It's my fault b/c I had this planned the day I made the purchase)
"I thought at the time of the purchase that the FX 5200 was a newer card and I'm suprised quite honestly that you would offer a graphics card that frankly doesnt belong with the rest of the components in this system."

I need the information to send the system back. STOP TALKING.

She then does all the catch up talking from my last hour on the phone and say's .. "Sir, of course you do have the (30 days) option to return the system"
"If were just talking about a graphics card, what one were you thinking about??"
I tell her the 256 MB ATI Radeon 9800 XT (I'm looking at Dells site and it's $506... I dont mention this)

"She says she would like to offer me the option to remove the FX - and ship this card out to me.. She also can give me a direct dial for someone in tech support that will help me get the card in as soon as it arrives.

If this next line works I've got her.....
"For 500 dollars??? No, I'm not interested."

Her reply "Well we can work on that figure"

GOTCHA........
"$325.00 I can have it there in 4-5 business days"
SOLD...

My XPS is Intel 3.2 HT / XP pro / 1 GB DDR / 120 GB Hard Drive / cd-rw / dvd
and now this 9800XT that's going to be here in a week... Not a bad system .. more than I would have paid if I built it.. but by the time this is slower than what's out there the economy should be better and I'll do that. For now .... this will do just fine.

GOOD LUCK....

I think this card is usually a $390 upgrade - so I guess you made out OK

It's 380 up if you buy it when configuring the system.

I got it for 325 as a single purchase. Plus I'm being credited 85.00 on the Airborn pick up of my FX 5200, that happend 10 minutes ago. This will apply to my system amount.

I think the cheaper systems are a better bargain (400SC, 8300). Of course you don't get the bigger case and PSU (or even an OS on the 400SC ;) ), but those are reasonable trade-offs.

For example, I got a 400SC P4 2.8GHz w/HT system for $350AR, dumped the PCI video card/CD-ROM/40GB Seagate Barracuda hard drive for over $80, added a buy.com XFX 5900 (non-SE) $158, 1GB Fry's special(s) PC3200 CL2.5 memory for $130 (can get a second GB for around the same price if I wait), $99AR/AC staples Memorex Dual-X (Pioneer DVR-106) DVD burner, $10AR 52x32x52 Lite-On CD-RW, $29AR Hercules DigiFire 7.1 (Fry's BF special), 2 x 200GB CC HD deals ($89AR and $67AR) and $85 for WinXP Home OEM (license and CD) off pricewatch.

The total for all that was under $950. I can always replace the PSU, but I prefer the silence of the stock one. Plus it's 100% stable anyways, so there's no point messing with it. I wouldn't trade my current config for that stripped XPS.

The XPS is always pretty overpriced.

Where was the fraud and lying? It's called haggling. That's why places employ people to "save the sale": they try to offer you special deals to keep you as a customer.

I say the more you can screw out of dell, more power to you!!!

Considering how they've shafted many of us on the specials they had no inventory of in the past months, i see absolutely nothing wrong with swindling them at their own game.

Not too sure how you think he's "fraudulent", "lying", or "swindling". It sounds like he was pretty upfront to me. He stated he wouldn't pay the "$500" for the car, and they gave him the "$325" price, so it looks like they totally understood what was going on here.

I still don't see how it could be fradulent. He STILL told her that the card that he got and paid for wasn't up to par with the machine. He has the right to send the machine back within 30 days, she (Dell) decides to give him a "deal" on a better card. He keeps the machine (good for Dell), he gets a better card (good for him).

Yeah, I don't think it's fraudulent, but definitely on the shadier side of ethics. He couldn't be charged with a crime for what he did.

But he understood that he could get the hardware upgrade he wanted cheaper that way than ordering it outright. Lots of deals tread into shady areas, so it's pretty surprising that people on a deal board would feel somehow outraged.

It's called haggling. Something that seems to be missing too much nowadays. All these companies naming their price, bah! What ever happened to the day when all prices were not set in stone and a man could be the one to make the offer. Takes the fun out buying anything if you ask me.

There was a recent article in the news where Verizion was sued for discrimination because some customers were getting better deals than others. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that "Haggling is a normal feature of many competitive markets". This is capitalism at its best. If you want a better deal, you have to do a little extra work to get it. In todays society most people have become too lazy to work for anything extra. If Dell did not allow this type of thing, he would not have gotten the deal so his extra work paid off.

So you saved about $800 (350+158+2x130+99+10+29+156+85=1135+ multiple instances of shipping or tax lets just say $1200 total)+no warranty+about 5-8 hours of work ordering, shipping, unpacking and installing everything.

You missed the over -$80 for the items I sold and I only have 1GB. :p Everything still has a warranty, just not everything through Dell. I live near Fry's and CC, I doubt everything, including installation, took more than 2 hours for each individual item.
