My wife?s sis purchased a dell Inspiron on my recommendation?. One day the lappy stopped working. She called it in and a tech came over to replace the mobo. The machine booted to windows but crashed to blue screen with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Talked to dell again was and told to reinstall windows for the CD. No biggie.
I booted from the CD and it was unable to copy some dlls. After a few tries it completed the coping of files. But as soon as windows installation screen came up, boom, blue screen with the same error.
Called dell and was told to use the chat feature online. Waited for 15 min for a dude to chat with me and tells me to call 888 #. OK
Called the # and after conformation that I have a dell, was told that it is the sales dept. Was given another 866 #. The dude in India spent 5 mins to confirm the address info tells me that it is not the correct dept. After expressing my frustration he tried to help me out and told me that I need to call another #. I sighed and call that # and an automated message told me that the wait time is 35 mins.
At this point I?m giving up and will call them in the morning.

PS ? WTF ?WTF. AAARRRRRGGGGGGGG

this is how you handle any and all dell hardware problems...

monitor: tell them it doesn't turn on at all...tried another power cable and outlet, still does not turn on. they will send you a replacement the next day.

hard drive: tell them it doesn't turn on at all...installed it in another computer that is the exact model, but still does not turn on. they will send you a replacement the next day.

cd rom: tell them it doesn't turn on at all...installed it in another computer that is the exact model, but still does not turn on. they will send you a replacement the next day.

starting to get the picture?

I have had many dell parts go bad in the past and have wasted countless hours through their crappy support system. The only way to get things done is to tell them that the part/unit is completely dead and that you need them to send you a replacement the next day. They will ask you whether you've tried it in different systems, always tell them yes and it's still dead. If you have x years limited next day warranty, they will have no choice but to shut up and send you another part the next day. Everyone knows it's a hardware problem, but their tech support is trained to read from a script and force you to run through 20 troubleshooting steps before they will realize it's a hardware issue. Even then, they will tell you it's an OS problem and tell you to reinstall.

that would have been so much easier than trying to convince the guy on the other end of the line that the agp bus was out of whack on my computer...
'your computer has no agp port'
'there is no agp driver to install, only a chipset driver'
'no, your computer has no agp port'
'ok, even if it does have an agp bus, there is no agp driver'
'sounds like a configuration problem, i'll get you over to our pay for tech service'
