i bought a dell 600m a couple months ago (2.0 Ghz Dothan 400mhz FSB, 1GB ddr, some other goodies that im lazy too recall) but i realized how crappily designed the cooling system was. It idles w/ the fan at 67k RPM at 41 C AND THATS AT 600 MHZ stepped down...i know, horrible...at load w/ 2.0ghz full throttle the crapface hits like 55 w/ the fan at 110k. I was thinking of a.) replacing the fan with a better one. b.) after the 2 year warranty is up i want to seal the bottom intake and cut a hole in the side and make that the intake. the bottom intake is ahorrible system as it draws up lint and such which kills the bearings of the fan. anyone have any working knowledge of the specific fan of the 600m (voltage usage etc, dimensions) it would be helpful.

1. Complain to dell. Ask for refund, tell them you know about the heating problems and the slow down in games.
2. Complain through the BBB if they Dell doesn't. Ask for refund.
3. .....
4. Get a latitude D610 or the D620---->Feb 2006.

I had the D600. It had bad heating problems and the hard drive would make my palm sweat.

I have a 600m and mine stays cool and the fan is not loud at all. It's not exactly a laptop meant to play games either.

the 600ms ive used have never had a problem, steped down to 600 mgz mine will run all day at 30 only using the fan some of the time and at 1.8 it will run all day around 55 without a cooling pad. i did have heat problems when playing cs, but i got a cooling pad and it works great now. keeps the temps 10-20 c lower. i think you should get centreno hardware control, (just google it) i think your monitering softwhere is whacked.
i dont think the fan runs at 67k or 110k rpm, if they do im impressed with that motor! also, those temps are not that bad for a lappy. make sure you are not using it in a bed or when in your lap your not blocking the intake on the bottom. if you are still having problems call dell, or re set the heat sink on the cpu with new coumpound. if you are accessing your hd a lot it will also raise your temps a lot with a laptop.

you think i should remove the keyboard and whip out the compressed air? but ive only had this laptop for 3 months...i suppose anything is possible.

edit: you may be right about my software. i use fangui for inspiron 8000s (despite the fact that its a 600m) ill give centrino hardware control a go.

My wife has had one for over a year, and it works great. Maybe yours isn't making good contact with heatsink?

I'm used the fan noise on my 600m, it's just everything else I hate about it... have had it a year, with the following problems:

1. PCMCIA slot broke (came loose)... had to open up the case and superglue the PC Card enclosure to the motherboard.
2. Touchpad is unresponsive about half the time.
3. Half the time if I close the cover the screen does not go off, and when it does, when I open the cover, the screen never turns back on.
4. CD-ROM drive works about half the time... either doesn't recognize a CD or attempts to read it forever.
5. Hates external USB devices.

Yes, I've reinstalled Windows..., no it didn't help.

Stupid 600m piece of crap.

lol you'll get a kick out of this. spoke to the tech "support" guy and i asked him if my computer idling at 40 degree celsius was a problem w/ the fan on all the time and he's like i already put in a dispatch order. sooo apparently he jumped right to the fact that my fan was faulty...

edit*: overall the 600m is nice. well at least mine is. i got 750 off using one of the gottadeal coupons a couple months back so i paid about 1300 for a 2050 laptop. i needed it for school and such. it scores 40 seconds on 1M super pi...not bad for a 2.0 ghz dothan w/ 1 gb ram. although it's nothing compared to my OCed opteron...

Dell should take the correct actions to correct the problem once you contact them. Just be very firm and don't accept no for an answer. D610 is a great laptop, but I wouldn't buy a new one to replace one that should be fixed under warranty.

D620 won't be out in Feb. of 06, expect them to ship sometime in the 2nd quarter.

I have a full suite of parts for the D600/600m, including a brand-new fan.
Your best bet is to simply coat the heatsinks with thermal paste, and sand off the included plastic crap.
