Dell hardware info needed

Hi,

Someone I know wants to get a Dell Dimension 2100 and they want me to fix their computer for them if it breaks and stuff. My only worry is that Dell computers have evil proprietary hardware that I won't be able to do anything with if something goes wrong. So if anyone is actually familiar with Dell computers I would like to know what kind of hardware they use, standard or super duper proprietary? Also, is it possible to buy a CD burner and install it into the Dell without running into any problems, such as not enough IDE slots etc?

thanks for any info

All the home systems are standard parts as far as I know. You only get into the proprietary stuff when you start playing with their low-profile business desktops.

The 2100 uses a standard Micro-ATX mobo.

that's funny...people usually buy dell computers so if/when they break they can have dell fix them. ok, that's ovbiously not always the case...i just happen to be working on a friends dimension 8100. anyway, there does not seems to be proprietary parts but this particular case doesn't make it to easy to work inside. as far as adding a cd-rw, it shouldn't be a problem. the mobo should support 4 devices, just make sure the case has an open 5-1/4" bay.

The only thing that's proprietory in Dell computers (as well as in PCs built by other large manufacturers) is the motherboard.

They no longer have a crappy custom videocard or soundcard or modem, or all integrated into one (eww, Packard Bell, gross!). You can stuff the case full of drives as long as you have enough IDE connectors. If you need even more drives, buy an ATA-100 controller ($20 or so on PriceWatch.com). That will give you 4 more connectors.

Check with Dell to see if adding hardware to the PC voids the warranty.
